More like 1915-1920. (Wasn't it 1910 when the boys tried to resurrect their mother?) But whether you're going by the anime continuity with it's "revelation" or the manga continuity which doesn't seem to incorporate that same idea, it's very clearly an alternate pre-WWI world similar to Germany.Zeta wrote:While we're on the subject, FMA IS supposed to be taking place in 1920s, proto-Nazi Germany, right? I mean, the only thing that maybe makes me think otherwise is that for some reason, the FMA world has a gigantic population of Muslims (*cough* Whoops - I mean Ishbalans*) in the eastern side of the country, complete with Arabic desert setup.

Spoilers in this spoiler tag.
Speaking of the humor in FMA, it's not really that funny, and my feelings are mixed about it. I like the humor because the creators didn't seem to want a drama fest after drama fest, so they added the humor so the creators didn't want anyone to think the anime is taking itself too seriously. On the other hand, there are a number of attempts at humor in scenes that are supposed to be taken seriously, such as the reunion between Ed and Hohenheim, but spoiled by an attempt at a humorous scene.
Still a good show though, and I love Maes Hughes; he seems to be the only good father figure in FMA. At one point, I got the impression the author had a grudge against dads.
