Different sides of the same coin. Or something like that.

You'd think so, but you'd be wrong.

So where are you at now, Spazz? Because by this time next week, when people speak of "New Orleans" they'll be talking about a lake.

I'm actually in Baton Rouge right now. We originally evacuated to Abita Springs, but that didn't turn out to be as safe as where we are now. We actually didn't get any traffic evacuating. We left for Abita the night before everyone else did, and headed for Baton Rouge after the roads were clear (the ones we took, anyway). In fact, the power has gone out about three times here. I was actually about to post this reply when the power went out for six hours.

I was hoping to go for a swim down the French Quarter, but apparently that area received minimal damage.

I keep hoping piranhas from the aquarium will escape into the Mississippi. They could totally thrive there.

"Dude," they're still partying down on Bourbon St. like it's Mardi Gras. All the electricty in that area is out, yet all of the bars are still open, and everyone is getting hammered!

Btw, it looks like classes at UNO aren't starting up again anytime soon.

Well, I mean, what else are they gonna do? Laissez les bons temps rouler, and all that. I guess Southern Decadence is still on.

Dude, I remember hearing about the major flooding at work. I was worried at first but it's good to know you're pretty much ok Spazz.
Anyway, is there any news on your local area yet? Like if it's flooded too?

Yeah, I've been seeing aerial footage all day of the flooding in New Orleans and everywhere around there. The flooding is actually a bigger problem than wind damage. It looks like my neighborhood specifically wasn't hit horribly, I saw some footage of the direct area where I live, and the floodwater seemed really low. You could see front lawns, etc. Although I'm sure much of it receeded before it got to how low it is now. There was a "levee breach," which means a part of land that was holding water in a canal broke open and added to the flood problem even more, and the water has been rising all day. That didn't effect my part of town really, it was on the other side of the canal that broke open. They tried plugging what they could of the spill, but that failed. I hear that we won't be able to go back to our house for about a week, and when we do, we'll only be allowed to go in, get as much stuff as we can that's worth taking, and re-evacuate. Currently, the city isn't really a healthy place to live. All of the power is out, and the water isn't clean. Also, it looks like the 25 mile Causeway Bridge (not the twinspans) that goes across the lake got damaged as well, which will probably make the drive home much longer, probably having to go around the lake or something. Anyways, everyone is safe right now, and that's what's important. I probably won't be home for a few weeks though, until then, I'll try to stay in touch as much as I can.

Good Luck, Spazz. You and your family are in my prayers.

The area I used to live in is under 10 feet of water. Most of my family from down there is in Baton Rouge right now. A couple of my cousins are unaccounted for. They were in Slidell, which was hit worse than N.O., I hear.

It's a mess down there. Now I'm glad I moved those few years ago.

You and your family are in my prayers.
So I can try to convince God to, y'know, not do this to you again.

Why would you want to live there? Seems like every year you have to evacuate, and the potential water damage to your house and possessions sounds terrible.

The message I had here before was incoherent babble. So, I'll just say shit happens, refer to an old blues song that was covered by Led Zeppelin and move on.

Come on, NT. Why does anyone live anywhere? If it's not hurricaines and floods it's earthquakes or tornados or snowstorms or heatwaves or forest fires or civil wars or killerbees or whatever. There's always SOMETHING.

Where i live, we'll be impressed to get rain, even in the middle of winter. Seriously, it's either overcast, or sunny. The only difference from this is when it snows, in April.

Honestly, the only bad things about living in Austin are the tornado season in spring (which usually amounts to nothing), and sometimes 100+ degree weather in summer (which I've gotten well used to). I'd say those aren't nearly as bad as annual hurricanes/intense flooding.
