I thought continuity simply meant that things recur and stay consistent from one iteration to another. Mario only seems to that half the time, and it doesn't have an offical canon with which to determine what "really happened" and what didn't.

That's why us fans end up having to make it up ourselves, much to my own chagrin.

Luckily we don't seem to be talking about Mario anymore.

For God's sake, let's not start talking about Sonic.

Hey guys, you remember that patent a few months back about a game that plays itself until you want to jump in and play? Looks like NSMB Wii will be the first game to use it. If you can't save/unlock stuff, I'm fine with this.

Also, since we're talking about continuity or whatever, I have a confession to make: I've been writing a giant super-continuity that includes the Kirby, Sonic, Pokémon, Zelda, and Mario franchises. Maybe I'll post it in that dead amateur writing thread.

In other news, Starfy is pretty damn fun. Now I'm actually curious to see the Wario cameo in... I think it was the third game?

I'm two weeks late, but since we're off topic again anyway I wanted to share an example of what the new image recognition software is capable of. A couple of engineers my brother works with were playing with it one day. They took a Vuzix visor that has a camera on the front so the screen displays what's in front of the user as if they weren't wearing it at all, probably the one that gives sight to the blind (no, really). Then they took a small rod, scanned it into the software, and told it to replace it with a polygon of a gun. Starting with the rod as the handle, it becomes a gun. Obviously you only see it if you're wearing a visor, but you can turn it at any angle and as long as the camera can see the object it scanned the polygon will follow it seamlessly. If you scan something thin like a piece of paper and turn it sideways he said it glitches out for a minute, but recovers pretty quick. Then they scanned an ordinary table. Tap a few lines into the program and now a line of ducks begins walking across the table. They made a shooting gallery. You can walk around it and look at it from almost any angle and the ducks will stay where they're supposed to be, as if they were really there. They effectively turned the table into a holographic gaming system. This isn't even what the product was made for; it was just a couple of guys dicking around with the software. It's insane.

We're so tantalizingly close to virtual reality. All of the elements are already on the table; just combine something like the Vuzix visor with its head tracker and image recognition with the Xbox's new external body tracking ability, maybe a more traditional controller like the Wiimote to handle movement and in-game props like swords and guns, and work in a set of wired gloves to provide precision finger tracking and haptic feedback to emulate touch (they already exist). The only thing you could add to that is a full body exoskeleton for force feedback or other attachments to give haptic feedback to other body parts (get your minds out of the gutter). That's as close as home consoles can get to VR outside of downloading our brains into computers. If arcades still existed they would probably be offering VR games already. All that's holding it back is the cost. The Vuzix people are still working on making it a peripheral for the next generation of consoles. Even without powergloves, adding that should be enough for someone to blaze a path into the virtual world.

Yes. There's a whole world dedicated to it in which Wario runs around at the top and you have to do stuff from below to get him to the goal, Lemmings-style.
Perhaps I should make a video of it someday...

That guy has an irritating hick accent.

Anyway! I'm assuming that they haven't been showing off the World 7 boss already, which presumably means that the Koopalings won't be fought in the Super Mario World order. They were in the SMW order in SuperStar Saga and were going to be in that order in Super Princess Peach before they were removed. Given that we've only seen Larry and Morton thus far, and they were the first two bosses in SMB3, it's likely that they'll be fought in that order.

I liked how they were all fought in different orders in SMB3, SMW and Yoshi's Safari so as not to create a hierarchy.

Since they run away from the fights in those demos, you probably face them again Mega Man-style at the end of the game; perhaps the order will be different yet again in this hypothetical finale?

Perhaps the final boss will be the Bowser Family all together? Since you can have up to four players and all...

It's a long shot, but I hope Tatanga is in Galaxy 2. He should have been in the first one.

I'm kind of disappointed. Sure, the Koopalings are interesting characters (moreso as a group than individually, I think), but they make for incredibly repetitive and uninspired bosses. The video here showed little innovation from how Larry and the rest of the Koopalings attacked in SMB3. Good God, the rest of the bosses in this new game had better get interesting. Fast.

The video reminded me of the Bowser Jr. fights from NSMB more than Mario 3, I really expect the game to follow the exact same format.

The boss battles were at least fairly distinct in Mario World, even if everyone but Ludwig was repeated.

At least the original NSMB had fairly novel end-bosses for each of the eight areas. I hope we see that in this new game.

There's nothing "novel" about giant-sized Goombas or re-using Petey Pirahna for the 2nd time as a boss.

P.S. I couldn't care less about the Koopa Kids. I'd be more surprised (and interested) if Donkey Kong Jr. made it somehow in the game.

Playing through Mario and Luigi 3, I kind of found it stupid that Bowser's ultimate special attack summons a giant block dog you get by collecting kittens when they could have had you collect Bowser's kids and have his ultimate attack be a Koopa family reunion/special attack.
