I hate Zangief

Post by Green Gibbon! »

Grappling characters kick my ass. Consistently. Even on the easiest difficulty setting, which I think theoretically I should be able to breeze through without much effort. And indeed I can, until I encounter Zangief or Abel and lose 36 rounds in a row before the game takes pity on me and allows me to win.

I have never been especially good at any Street Fighter game - in fact, I suck - but I've never had this much consistent trouble, at least not on easy difficulty, especially not against Zangief who I actually never paid much attention to at all until this sequel.

I must be doing something wrong. Obviously I can't approach them because they can take off half my power bar with combo throws I can't seem to break out of, and once I'm down, they're on top of me for another goddamn half-minute throw the split second I rise before I even regain control of my character. I have a particularly hard time when playing as characters with mainly mid-range attacks, so I have to get close enough, but one blocked kick and they're all over me. Two missed punches and I'm as good as street pizza. On easy mode!

I know the game isn't that poorly balanced, so I'm quite certain there's an essential strategy I'm failing to employ. Please advise.

The game really IS that poorly balanced. Zangief is the beginner character; sloppier finishers that replace quarter turns with full rotations and over-the-top damage increase. I'd say to fight cheese with cheese. Use Ken and continuously shoryuken until victory. After that, it's all Akuma, baby.

But hell, I lose every time against my mates. Then again, I only play as Cammy because she's English.

That's kind of what I've been doing. When you switch characters, though, your opponent also changes, even if you switch back to the character you were originally using. It's a cheap way to shake off Zangief (wish I could do the same for Seth), but it kind of seems like a shame to have to do that. Especially on one star difficulty. Dear Lord, what's become of me?

Third one was better, anyway.

Zangief totally ruled in Street Fighter II Gold, my favorite Street Fighter II game, the only one I could beat with less than five coins... too bad they never ported it to any videogame console. I just couldnt get the hang to any Street Fighter II newer than that one...

Try to play Street Fighter II Gold, in Mame, thats the easiest Street Fighter game ever, trust me, No wonder it was everyone favorite fighter game in the local Arcade for years...

I've never been that great at Street Fighter but I just got this book and it is gorgeous. I like Street Fighter better when I can enjoy it without actually having to play it.
