Is Knuckles' story taking place after Sonic's really common knowledge outside of this forum? I've never seen it mentioned anywhere else.

I think one had to assume that if Knuckles was gonna attempt to kick Sonic's ass in the Hidden Palace of Sonic's story, Knuckles would have to still be in good graces with Eggman. Various attempts on the former's life by the latter's robot probably wouldn't help this condition. Plus there's little shit like the Death Egg being absent in Knuckles' Lava Reef; you can see the top of the volcano.

If you want less something less inferred and more implied, beat S3&K with Sonic and you'll see Knuckles' lil' assassin there emerge from the Doomsday wreckage. (Before SA1 was announced, I took that as a cue that Eggman was dead and another sequel wasn't to be expected.)

Actually, that part was replaced in S3&K by a little scene of the three playable characters over a big "Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles" logo/ platform thing.
You only get that scene by beating Sonic & Knuckles (the stand-alone game) with all 7 Chaos Emeralds as Sonic. 6:45

Wow. It's been years since I last played this not getting the Super Emeralds. But I think I remember what you're talking about.

Anyway, I remember playing that Sonic XG a while back. I remember the first level at least, with some pieces of the Death Egg falling to the island, destroying the ground and everything. Pretty chaotic, and pretty cool.

I always thought that Knuckles' story was just like a non-canon side story.

I always knew that Knuckles' story took place after Sonic's in S&K just by the subtle differences in the levels.

I never beat S3K with more than... 2 or so Chaos Emeralds. These spherical, rolling/rotating special stages make me dizzy.

Out of all of the special stages, I had the easiest time with Blue Spheres.

They were quite clever with it. The Death Egg was completely removed, Eggman was replaced by Egg Robo, the sea is replaced by skyline in Angel Island Zone's background, the ghosts have already been released from the capsule in Sandopolis Zone Act 2, Mecha Sonic is still around because he never blew up when Sonic defeated him (he does when Knuckles defeats him). There was a lot of attention to detail.

One anachronism that does bother me though is Angel Island Zone getting set on fire again. I guess that one must have slipped under their radar.

Maybe it was a different part of the Zone. I mean, if the whole island is Angel Island then I guess it could be any old jungle.

Or maybe it rained. Super hard.
