Can you use diamond brackets when creating custom BB codes? If so, you could set up custom BB tags that represent HTML tags. (E.g. Defining ‘<i>’ & ‘</i>’ as BB tags to produce italics).

That's a brilliant idea, but I think according to http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/bb_code you still have to use square brackets.
