As I understand it, Murray has always been really stubborn about not doing a part 3. This way, all he really has to do is show up in the studio, record a few lines, and leave. Maybe do two or three days worth of work. I heard that more recently, the actors also worried that they were basically getting too old to do another movie... that no one wants to see the Ghostbusters pushing 60, or even worse, as experienced teachers training a "new generation" of Ghostbusters.
For awhile the rumour was that they were going to make an all-CG animated movie, but I guess they went with the game instead. Either way it seems they really wanted their sequel to take place within a couple of years of the previous film.
