Buying or Renting?
I was thinking about getting this game that got good reviews. I am hesitant though because I heard you could beat it in four and a half hours and I don't want to spend 50 bucks on such a short game. Yet for some reason I would rather buy it than rent it. I feel this way about all games. Am I retarded or is there some reason for this I am not getting?

Riddick, but that isn't the point. I game can take me 5, 10, 20, or 30 hours to beat and then it will just sit on the shelve forever and never be played again. Or I could just rent it and save myself 45 dollars. Yet I always choose to buy, in this case I'll probably wait for it to drop to 20 bucks because I am not that eager, but I am still going to buy it and not rent it. Is this a common thing among you guys?

Don't you have 10 days to bring back the game if it sucks (with reseat of course)? I can. Or maybe it's just GAME that does that.Zeta wrote:I live in hicktown USA. The only videogames my local video store has to rent are broken Super Nintendo games. That's fucking right, Super Nintendo.
So that means I'm screwed if I buy a bad game - since I have to buy EVERY game I play.

I tend to buy most games that I'm even vaguely interested in. I only rent games if my dad or something has to go to the videostore or Cockbuster anyway, and I see something I want to play. Even then, I only rent shit I had no intention of buying, mostly mediocre games like Red Dead Revolver or Siren.
I make it a point to try to buy games (new), whenever possible. It probably explains why I'm constantly broke, and why my collection of games/electronics is probably worth more than the run-down apartment I live in, but it keeps me happy.

I allways buy, but only because the most up to date console I have is my megadrive and I have no option for renting games for my imac. So I don't really have a lot of choice in the matter. It's a pain, though, and given the choice I would rent first to see whether I had ended up with another dungeon siege.
Sorry if I am in the presence of any dungeon seige fans here, but I wish they had put as much "innovation" into the story as they did with that flashy pre-emptive loading system. Go here, do this, bridge unblocked, door unlocked etc. yawn. And the character progression system sucked monkey grits. Don't like your dumbass fighter? Level him up for a few hours and he's now the parties' mage with an IQ of 6000!
Fortunately, I finally managed to get rid of dungeon seige. It is one of the drawbacks of being an applecore in that mac gamers are rare, and so getting rid of crocks is much harder.

I never rent games any more, because no matter how short they are, I KNOW I won't be able to beat them in one weekend.
I play games in little bits at a time, several games at once, spread over months. It wouldn't really work well unless I bought them. Fortunately, this isn't much of an income drain, because these days I'd be lucky if they released six games a year that I had any interest in playing.

No, that is still fine. The issue is buying a game I know is good versus renting it since I know I can beat it within the rental period. It'd save me 45 bucks, yet I still feel like I want to own it for whatever reason. I seriously doubt I would ever play through it again, it is very rare for me to find a game like that, unless it is like 8 years old or more.chix0rgirl wrote:...Is "rent, then buy if it's any good" an option at all? Or is that against the convictions of gamers? :P

I haven't rented a game in something like 6 years. In fact, I believe the last console I ever rented for was the N64.
Even when I was at GameStop and could check out any game in the store for free, I only ever utilized the privelage twice, and the second time I ended up buying the game in question. (Incidentally, the last I heard, employee checkout is now only reserved for those who make an insane GI% each week.)
I just like having games in my collection. Whether I can beat it in two sittings or whether I'll never beat it, if I like it, or even like something about it, I'll have to own it. And not a grimy used copy either, it's got to be brand spanking new.

I never rent, I hate doing it. If I don't like the game, then I just wasted 5 bucks on it. But if I liked the game, then I just spent 5 extra bucks on a game I'm going to buy. I usually just check out previews, reviews, and other crap like that. There are a lot of games I buy because I know they're going to be good. I only have 1 game that I wish I didn't buy. Street Fighter 2 for GBA, my other 14 or so games I think are awesome, but I don't plan on ever playing that game again. I got it because my friend was going to get the game too, so we could fight each other when we went somewhere or got bored. He never bought it.
I don't like used games, ever since my Virtual On for dreamcast kept freezing.
