Sonic 1 Japanese Instruction Manual question

Post by Tsuyoshi-kun »

On pages 18-19 of the manual, at the bottom of page 19, it explains how Sonic can get an extra life if he gets 100 rings. However, it also says (I think) that he can get a 1-up from collecting 50,000 points (like in Sonic 2, 3, Knuckles, and Sonic CD). Is "50,000 points gets you an extra life" thing added in to the Japanese version later? In the U.S. version you didn't get an extra life no matter how many points you got..

Ok, just took a quick spin in Japanese Sonic 1 and having 50000 points doesn't give you an extra life as a reward.

That's funny, I just took a quick spin in the Japanese Sonic 1 and I totally got a 1up at 50,000 points. Getting one of those under 30-second clears for the first stage is an easy enough way to confirm it. Did you use an actual cartridge? (I did)

Nope, though I thought the version in Sonic Mega Collection was the Japanese version. It had the version with the scrolling clouds and the fixed spike glitch, neither of which were in the original U.S. release (and my cartidge is the original U.S. 1991 print).

Used the Japanese ROM. Got 50000 by going over 3 acts.

It's possible the 50000-point reward for completing a level under 30 seconds comes with an automatic extra life. Otherwise, you would get an extra at every 50000-mark which doesnn't seem to happen.

It happens, I checked again because you people are being so resistant! I got four 1ups, none of which directly connected to time bonuses, all at 50,000 point intervals.

I wouldn't trust some file I found on the internet to be the actual "Japanese" ROM. The one I have, for instance, said that it's all three regions rolled into one, though superficially at least it appears to be the Japanese version (I haven't checked for the 1up thing though). The cart version, naturally, is the one included with the manual that contains this suspicious text, so at least in this case everything matches up, it is definitly the release that the manual is refering to!

I don't know what rom you guys are using, but in the one I have, you definitely get a 1up every 50,000 points. Although, interestingly, this only seems to work if the emulator itself is set to Japan region. I played the same rom with the emulator set to US region and while it still had the scrolling clouds and all that, there was no 50,000 point bonus.

Silv, do you have a Japanese Mega Drive?

Nope, but I've got a MegaKey convertor, so I can fool the games into thinking I've got one. It works really well, it'll even fool those multi-region games (I think Gaiares is one of those, I might have a couple others) into running in whatever region the convertor is set for.
