Sonic CD PC Version music

Post by daytonafathead »

If you buy Sonic CD for the PC (with the american music) and you have Sonic Screensaver, could you delete the BGM files from the BGM folder in Sonic CD and put in the BGM files from the Sonic Screensaver BGM folder (which has the japanese BGM) into the folder from Sonic CD and listen to the japanese BGM while you play the game, or will that do nothing at all? Or something that'll ruin the game? Help?

No. The Sonic CD music is read off the game in regular CD audio format, and is never put onto your hard drive. You would need to write a dual-format CD of data and audio and replace all the audio with Japanese music. Incidentally, this doesn't work.

Actually, it SHOULD. I'm going to test that theory by

1) copying the CD data track to an ISO file

2) burning that ISO as track 1 and replacing Spencer Nielsen's SCD soundtrack with the superior Japanese soundtrack for the audio tracks, replacing track-for-track

Oh, and I did manage to get Sonic CD to work under XP Professional. Not unpatched, but it works.

[Edit] It DOES work. I'm actually playing with the movie files, replacing the music in those too. =P

I wish I had both a Sega Mega CD and Saturn

What did you use to do it? I gave it a shot a while ago and it pretty much told me to sodomise myself when I tried to install it.

Nero 6. Mixed mode CD, and I suppose the fact that I have a DVD drive as well as a burner does help the issue. Apparently, there is a patch to get SCD to work under XP - can't go fullscreen but that's why I set Compatibility mode for the program.

The steps I used are: copy data and music to drive, burn to CD.

Copy the data track to ISO format on your hard drive, as well as tracks 2, 30 and 35-42. These tracks are the same on either side of the pond (yes, apparently they left some of the original music in).

Just make sure your tracks are in the same location on the CD as the originals. Here's the track list:

2 - Sound Effect A
3 - Palmtree Panic: Present
4 - Palmtree Panic: Good Future
5 - Palmtree Panic: Bad Future
6 - Collision Chaos: Present
7 - Collision Chaos: Good Future
8 - Collision Chaos: Bad Future
9 - Tidal Tempest: Present
10 - Tidal Tempest: Good Future
11 - Tidal Tempest: Bad Future
12 - Quartz Quadrant: Present
13 - Quartz Quadrant: Good Future
14 - Quartz Quadrant: Bad Future
15 - Wacky Workbench: Present
16 - Wacky Workbench: Good Future
17 - Wacky Workbench: Bad Future
18 - Stardust Speedway: Present
19 - Stardust Speedway: Good Future
20 - Stardust Speedway: Bad Future
21 - Metallic Madness: Present
22 - Metallic Madness: Good Future
23 - Metallic Madness: Bad Future
24 - Boss
25 - Final Boss (Final Fury) (US: same as 24)
26 - Title Screen
27 - Title Screen (duplicate)
28 - Level Complete (Zone Clear)
29 - Speed Shoes (Super Sneakers)
30 - Invincibility
31 - Game Over
32 - Special Stage
33 - Time Attack theme (US: Little Planet instrumental)
34 - You Can Do Anything (US: Sonic Boom short form)
35 - Sound Effect B
36 - Palmtree Panic: Past
37 - Collision Chaos: Past
38 - Tidal Tempest: Past
39 - Quartz Quadrant: Past
40 - Wacky Workbench: Past
41 - Stardust Speedway: Past
42 - Metallic Madness: Past

I also managed to successfully edit the US opening and ending movies to include the japanese music. The files are actually smaller =P You Can Do Anything is the same length as Sonic Boom (short form) but Cosmic Eternity is about a minute short, so the last minute of both ending movies is silent. I'd upload the edited files (the game still works with them) but combined they're about 120MB...

Don't worry about it, I've got both soundtracks on my HD. I'll give it a shot sometime.
