I still don't think so. Most games are just Tomb Raider.

Yeah, but most movies are crap and most art is crap and most writing is crap, &c. &c. &c. That doesn't make it an invalid artform, it just means you have to find the good stuff.

And most movies are still shit like "National Treasure". What's your point?

In other mediums you always have experimental and independent markets, but that's something that the game industry still lacks. I agree, I think this is the biggest reason that games haven't really been accepted in the Arts community quite yet. It's more than just a generation gap (though that is a factor), and Light Speed isn't totally off base with his comment.

We just need more developers to really push the envelope and take advantage of the unique advantages that video games offer over books or movies.

They're on their way, though, and I have faith that in a few decades games'll be just as well regarded.

I think you'll see a really strong independent games movement emerge, but mostly on the PC. At least, at first. Online delivery is really going to change things... by reducing the delivery cost and eliminating the need for a traditional distribution structure. It's going to be a lot easier for small developers to afford going it alone.

Make that a $27 million loss.

But that doesn't mean you can't buy a Phantom thong.
