Ever wonder why a gorilla or whatever he is, is named DONKEY Kong?

Because Shiggy wanted to name the character after King Kong, with a goofy twist so he wouldn't be so intimidating/scary/traumatizing for the kiddies.

I think it's to emphasize the fact that he's stubborn, or something close to that.

Yeah, I think it was also something of a translation gaffe.

Fuck Donkey.

What the hell is "Diddy" supposed to mean?

I shudder to think of it.

That'd be a fairly large family tree. Donkey 1/Cranky, DK Jr, DKC Donkey Kong, Diddy, Funky, Candy, Wrinkly, Swanky, Kiddy, Lanky, and two I can't remember.

Anyways, my point is that it'd been said that Diddy is the current Donkey Kong's nephew.

And Diddy's girlfriend, Dixie, is Donkey Kong's cousin.

Make of that what you will.

I believe it was originally supposed to be called "Monkey Kong", but either the name was already taken or Nintendo was afraid of getting sued, so they changed it to "Donkey Kong", which must makes sense if you're a wacky Japanese videogame designer.

It's sort of ironic that they changed the name to avoid legal troubles, since they got sued anyway. They won the case, but still.

I always assumed the DK from DKC was DKJr. all grown up and Cranky was the father. *shrugs* I never really got into the DKC universe though on the account I thought it was an overrated franchise.

Peach is already getting her own game on the DS and Donkey Kong already has two on the GCN.

It is Toad who is really getting screwed over.

When was the last time he was playbale in a Mario related game--Mario Kart 64? I haven't played MK:DD so correct me if he's playable there also.

Who'd they get sued by, and for what?

If I can recall, it was Universal who sued Nintendo over Donkey Kong because they thought the 'Kong' name was a violation of copyrights--something like that. However, the case was thrown in Nintendo's favor since it was dicovered that the King Kong franchise was placed under public domain, if I remember correctly.

Or to be more precise, that Universal had just wrapped up a case that they weren't obligated to pay the original author of King Kong because his copyright had expired.

Funny how right after that they decide to sue Nintendo.
