Re: Archie Sonic is probably dead
We're probably getting a Boom comic. Maybe Sega looked at the Boom TV ratings, compared them with the comic sales, and decided they could do better.
I lament only the abruptness of its demise. Any story that goes on for that long deserves an ending. Hopefully Ian will give the fans something.

Yeah, people were hoping that Megadrive gets its third issue out, or that the flagship comic itself reaches the arbitrary 300th issue. I just hope that we wrap up most of the loose ends and the last issue implies that the Freedom Fighters' adventures in the Archie-verse continue.
So, I guess this is probably the end of the SatAM cast in officially published media, huh?

As much as I disliked the lingering influence of DiC's contributions, I do find myself having pangs of sympathy for all those people who been invested in those characters. But on the other hand, they've had a much longer run than any supporting character of a licensed property had any right to.
Imagine if Oogtar the Caveboy stuck around for a quarter of a century!

To be fair, I did really like what the reboot did to them, both design- and personality-wise. But then again, after Sonic Team's original characters had more and more character development, the Freedom Fighters gradually became more redundant. I don't think they really ever found a good use for Rotor, especially, after Tails was established to be a mechanical genius in Western media.Dr. BUGMAN wrote:As much as I disliked the lingering influence of DiC's contributions, I do find myself having pangs of sympathy for all those people who been invested in those characters. You're right, though, in that they had a good run for what they were.

IDW is picking up the reins. The only thing of theirs I've read was the Jurassic Park comics. They were terrible.
They say they're gonna recruit as many Archie Sonic staff as possible. Hopefully that means more Tyson Hesse and Diana Skelly!

They're definitely gonna have to reboot it again. I wonder if they'll use any of the Freedom Fighters? I know Archie still owns many of those characters.
I'd really like to see something along the lines of the Dash and Spin manga. In my mind, that was the best adaptation of the brand to print, and it wouldn't lead to any of the problems Archie or StC had to deal with.

Re: Archie Sonic is probably dead
My guess is that they're going to make a clean break because 1) SEGA can dictate that all characters designed for the new comic are solely their property and thus never have to deal with negotations with disparate right-holders or Penders-esque shenanigans ever again, and 2) like I said, SEGA characters are filling in more and more character archetypes and niches, making everyone else increasingly redundant. Why have Rotor be a sort of vague weapons specialist and Tails handle everything else when Tails can handle all the nerd shit from the get-go?Jingles wrote:They're definitely gonna have to reboot it again. That said, I think an official crossover with the main Archie cast and that of the new comic for shits and giggles would actually be feasible, unlike one for the Archie and Sonic the Comic crews.

Presenting, for your delectation: Tangle the Lemur.
Ian Flynn wrote:After over 300 issues at Archie Comics, IDW Publishing acquired the rights to make Sonic comics from Sega in 2017 and are rebooting the series with a fresh #1. Starting over from scratch gives IDW and series writer Ian Flynn the chance to shake things up and add new things to Sonic’s world, and Tangle is one of them.
“Before she even had a name, we knew we wanted her to be like a lot of other great Sonic characters and have a special ability tied to one of her features. Think Tails or Knuckles,” IDW associate editor David Mariotte told IGN in an email interview. “So, we were brainstorming animals who could do cool stuff and a ring-tailed lemur who could use her tail alternately like a whip or like a fist was too cool to pass up! Throw in her scrappiness, she likes to ‘tangle’ with bad guys, and you have an awesome character!”
As for whether Tangle will appear in any video games, Mariotte couldn’t say, as that decision lies exclusively with Sega.

I kinda like her design, honestly.

She's got a decent balance of warm and cool colors. Her name lacks cadence (not even in the Sega canon are all characters X the Specie. jesus). Otherwise, a resounding meh.
Lemur, though... Anthropomorphizing a non-human primate is an interesting choice since they're already a lot like us, arguably to a disturbing degree.

I think the way the furry tufts of her tail form "fingers" is grotesque and using the appendage to shake hands is an abomination.

Re: Archie Sonic is probably dead
Honestly, if they were going to make a new character, basing it off of an exaggerated physical trait that lends itself to action wasn't a bad choice. It's arguably how Tails and Knuckles came to be, and it just isn't another cartoon animal with Sonic proportions.
The only thing I'm not keen on is the amount of details in certain parts of her design, especially her shoes. It's a tad distracting.

Here's a """"""brilliant"""""" idea I had: an evil counterpart to Tangles!!!

I'd make a joke about an evil parallel-dimension counterpart to Tangle, but I'm afraid Penders will hear my words on the wind and sue.
