Invader Zim DVDs.

Post by daytonafathead »

I just got the first two Zim DVDs and now my life is complete. Ever since the m@#$#%@f#$%ers at Nick and Vaicom cancelled it, I have been going insane. That insaneness made me join here a few months ago in the first place. But it's wierd that "Anime Works" produced the DVDs, since they are, well, an anime company. But who cares about the reason they did, now I can watch GIR do stuff 24/7. The third DVD will have a bunch of unaired episodes and stuff and the first one even has the unaired pilot. You can get the DVDs at Wal-Mart and even Hot Topic. Everyone should leave their houses right now and buy them. The pig commands you.

It's the third DVD that I'm really looking forward to. I've already seen the "unaired" season 2 episodes, which you can download all over the place online... but the unedited version of the Christmas special was never leaked, and it'll be great to finally see how much Nick chopped out!

What bright Nickelodeon exec had the idea to let Jhonen Vasquez do a series for a kid-friendly network in the first place?

I'm thinking about picking up one of the DVDs tomorrow.

Oh, and Jhonen himself is adorably sexy in a skinny, strange, Emo-kidish kind of way.

I think they went with Zim because conceptually it's such a winner. It sounds like a really cool show, it had to have been the easiest show to pitch in the world.

As a kid, I always remembered Nickelodeon for its gross-out shows like You Can't Do That on Television (which is, to my eye, a closer TV equivilant of MAD magazine than MAD TV ever was, mostly in that my mother didn't want me to watch it) and that game show where kids got to pick flags out of a giant slime-filled nose. Sure, I liked some of their other shows too (Inspector Gadget in particular) and the gross-out factor was not why I watched Nickelodeon, but it's a mental association that kinda stuck with me, sorta like how I don't see how anyone can take FOX News seriously when I can remember when their "news" show was the T&A-laden "Hard Copy." Having already pushed the edges of good taste with Ren & Stimpy, Zim seems like a logical progression, which, to be honest, seems like a much more tasteful show, maybe just because there's less nose-picking and hairy asses (I'm not talking about Mr. Horse here).

I think somewhere inside I probably am aware that Nick has cleaned itself up a bit, but Nickelodeon was exactly the sort of place I expected to see a show like Zim.

The first IZ show I ever saw was the halloween one. I thought, "Is IZ this weird ALL the time?"

Do they sell IZ DVDs in England? If so, where? I've been checking online stores to see where they were, no luck.

And I think Jhonen Vasques wanted to cancel the cartoon because he wasn't happy with it. That's what I heard, anyway.

Haven't found it ANYWHERE. A friend of mine had to order it from America. He let me borrow it. I watched it in one sitting.

I was talking like a Bond villian on crack for a week afterwards.

This Vasquez quote kind of explains why Zim got made in the first place:
Jhonen: The original plan, the one they sold me on, was that they were looking to catch some of that older audience Cartoon Network was getting. Nick's a monstrous network, and they're not hurting for ratings, but nobody really thinks of them in terms of cool shows like Pete N' Pete or Ren and Stimpy anymore. So they wanted something "edgy", and even went so far as to make that wiggly "edgy" gesture with their hands that implies... "edgy."

What ended up happening is that as ZIM got closer to being finished, there were no other shows being worked on that fit in with this 'wiggly finger gesture' block that Nick had seemed so thrilled about. We ended up premiering, sammiched between Fairly Oddparents and Rocket Power - two shows perfect for kids, but not the kind of kids I wanted to make shows for. They created this 30 minute chasm of nightmares that the kids had to cross between musical numbers and extreme sports toddlers on skates.

Rather than change the show into something it wasn't, I just went on giving them the show they didn't quite know they were asking for. Like it or not, they were responsible and helped me make something that I'm proud of, that makes children cry. Go me!

I was talking with some friends about that today. According to them, Mark Summers (the host) is a total neatness freak and if he ever got slime or jizz or anything on him during thr show, when they'd cut for a break he would totally flip out and scare children. I don't know if that's true or not, but apparently now he hosts a cooking show and does not actually handle the food himself.

If I'm not mistaken Mark Summers has had the condiction for a long while now, but has been taking courses or treatment (whatever you want to call it) to control it. This was a while back, like two or three years ago. Maybe he's already over it? ..or he still has that thing..

I dunno. Oh, and don't ask me how I know this.

unfortuanetly, they will only show the edited version of the christmas epidode, even though Jhonen pleaded to have the uncut version on the DVD. Last I heard. I could be wrong. But the 3rd DVD should still be good because they have the unaired season 2 episodes (they're unaired, even though I swear i've seen the one with Dib flying Tak's ship. ) I'll see you later pig.

That's pretty crazy if that's true, because if I recall correctly, didn't Summers also host another "omg mom and dad getting messy wif SLIME = rofl" show on Nickelodeon?

"What Would You Do" or something, right?

Summers is still around. He hosts "Unwrapped" on the Food Network. It's a cool show! Yes, I like cooking shows. They make me hungry.

Daytona, good news! According to the press release issued for the third DVD, the uncut X-mas episode IS on there. Unlike much of the other stuff that Nick cut, that episode was made recently enough that it was still lying around in it's unedited form.
