Concept Artwork For "Epic Mickey" from Warren Spector

Post by Edgerock »

Amongst other non-ludological things, concept art for an “interactive game” called “Epic Mickey.”

Seems to lend some credibility to that story from late last year about a Warren Spector-developed, steampunk-themed title of the same name. I really, really, really hope this is being fully realized, or I’ll be very sad.

Wow. After years of anal franchise control practices, Disney's just letting someone go to town. I don't know if that's good or bad, but it's certainly interesting.

I like it if only cause it doesn't reek of Final Fantasy, unlike say the new Metroid.

Reminds me of the artwork released for the game Alice.

Looks really interesting. I'd love to hear the details of this idea's plot.

Love that "castle suspended over a thin pinnacle" look.

So, the plot is that paint thinner attacked Disney world and caused it to break down, and you've got to fix it? Perhaps?

I'm scared.

Wasn't that the plot of Who Framed Rodger Rabbit?

Some of these like http://web.mac.com/askbotboy/Site/Chara ... worx-5.jpg or the zombie robot Goofy will haunt me forever.
The landscapes and machinery look utterly amazing though; I just don't know if mixing this with Disney franchises is simply ridiculous or a bewildering stroke of genius, utilising the corruption of something familiar and associated with cheerfulness and cuteness to further enhance the disturbing feel of the scenario.

It looks like one of those weird intentionally copyright-breaking modern art exhibits you see all the time these days.

If Zeta ends up being right about the plot, that'll be awesome.

I was thinking that might be a possibility, but I thought too much effort went into that art.

Hey! Maybe it's Spector's vision of "Air Pirates"! Eh? Eh?

This.....is more bizarre and weird an idea then Kingdom Hearts' initial announcement. Here's hoping this actually makes it past concept art.

Looks pretty awesome and haunting. Also, I've grown a soft spot for Horace Horsecollar after watching all the B/W Mickey cartoons (even if he has less personality than Mickey, I kind of feel bad for him because he was a main character before Donald and Goofy, and also for the whole recent official Goofy/Clarabelle pairing which I loathe), so it struck a chord when I saw him in one of the concept art. This bizarre contrast of the wholesome image of Disney and the post apocalyptic Disney World looks sweet. I wonder if the game will be any good.

Recent? That was evident as far back as "The Band Concert".

Actually, the first time Goofy and Clarabelle really worked on something together is Orphan's Benefit (the B/W version). But Horace was also a part of that dance, so. The first time they ever interacted together was the Whoopee Party, but Clarabelle was pissed at him.

Anyway, even though Goofy and Clarabelle played off of eachother's instruments in The Band Concert for like, 10 seconds, I'd hate to think 10 seconds of interaction somehow overrides numerous cartoons of Clarabelle and Horace dancing with eachother and bumping eachother's butts on a number of occasions. I guess I hate this attempt at shoehorning in a girlfriend for Goofy. His girlfriend should either be his wife that was an offscreen voice or dead. I guess there was also Esmeralda from that How to be a Knight short.

According to their sources, the game is indeed a Wii exclusive, and you will "paint your way through levels using the Wii Remote", doing things like drawing and erasing "whole parts of levels".

It'll be based around a story where Disney's lesser, forgotten characters rise up against Mickey, which would explain the emphasis on hot military action seen in the game's concept art.
So what we have here is Okami mixed with an RTS with the plot being the forgotten Disney characters from the original shorts attempt to assassinate Mickey with paint thinner.

Again: WHAT THE FUCK?!

Maybe the numerous mice orphans that used to frequent the old Mickey shorts will appear. Maybe Alice from the old Alice shorts too. There were also recurring characters from Mickey's old barnyard gang that were phased out when Mickey stopped living in the barnyard, like a pair of long droopy dogs, a fat female pig, and I wonder if the villain Kat Nipp will appear (a villain who appeared in a total of two shorts). Actually, I want that parrot from Steamboat Willie to appear (Mickey hit it twice with throwing a potato and a brick at it before). There was also a policeman who tried shooting down and arrest Mickey for deliberately duck hunting after him scoffing at a sign that clearly said no duck hunting, and somehow I liked to play with the thought of that policeman trying to hunt Mickey down for his crime for later cartoons.

Of course this would be too much fanservice and it's unlikely they'll incorporate any of the characters I just mentioned.

I want the ending to be Donald and Scrooge sweeping in while the two armies are fighting and wipe them out, then make Duckburg the capital of the planet.

Wii Exclusive
Fuck that. The Wii can't do these visuals justice.

Sounds almost like De Blob to me, which I loved. Awesome. The whole bit about "drawing and erasing 'whole parts of levels'" makes me wonder how this game is supposed to play. Platformer? Puzzler? First-person shooter?? It all seems like fair game to me.

I also love that this game is going to available for the Wii. The only concern I have is that Disney may try to tone down the final product. If the environment and story of this game make it through largely unedited, it'll definitely widen the boundaries of what Disney has attempted. That's a big risk for this particular company, so I'll have to give them props for that.

I rarely get excited for games anymore, but... This one definitely has me intrigued.
