For the question at hand...

Which of these two options would you prefer?

Option 1 - To win the lottery and buy your own private island stocked with hot girls/guys and live the rest of your days in blissful relaxation, or...
Option 2 - Direct the next Sonic / Sonic Team game with total creative freedom, and unlimited budget and schedule?

As long as I'm fantasizing about the first option, I might as well imagine the second one.

I think most of us would chose Option 1. Everyone knows the Sonic fanbase can't be pleased. Why would you ever want to put yourself in a position where everyone will probably hate you no matter what?

#2 without a second's hesitation. Considering the vitriol feelings towards Sega most people have now, I don't see how it could be any worse. At least I'd be happy with it.

Then, with funds embezzled out of that infinite budget, I'd go live on the island.

I wouldn't take #2 lightly. Go ahead, take it out of context. I'd definitely try to incorporate all the things I've felt have been missing from the series personally, but I'd definitely want to assemble a creative team. I don't trust anybody who thinks they can come up with a better plot, better level ideas and a better set of bosses. I think that's the biggest thing that pisses me off about this conversation, the people who think they could single-handedly save the series. I'm aware that the perfect Sonic game isn't in my head. Rather, I think it's scattered across the heads of many people who will probably never set foot near a Sonic game brainstorming session.

EDIT - Off-topic, but are gr4yj4y, Zeta and Hybrid's avatars all broken on everyone else's computer, too? I'm starting to wonder if it's just my machine being douchey.

Broken since the forum upgrade cause they didn't change/re-enter them.

I say we forcibly change it for them to the pelvis-thrusting Stormtroopers.

Seconded. We have to pull this forum out of its current mediocrity.

And I'd probably go with #2's infinite budget and lure Naka, Yasuhara and Ohshima into it. And probably launch a new Dreamcast with HVDs and 4 Radeons HD 4870 X2 to go with it.

My budget includes living expenses, which will inevitably include my own private island.

Anyways, if I went with number 2, I'd probably reboot the series from Sonic Adventure onwards, without all of that Chaos Control nonsense. Teleporting over the shark indeed.

You mean no Shadow? Hmm... (Not sure if that's a good or bad "Hmm...").

I think it'd be interesting to reboot from after SA2, personally. Shadow still dead and all, for closure.

Yeah, but I liked Sonic Battle. Guess it's worth it to get rid of Shadow's game, Sonic '06 and other such nonsense.

That's too much like fan think, in the bad sense. In the Sonic series the status quo is almost always retained. There's no point in officially wiping a game's story out of continuity when it can simply be ignored but un-contradicted.

I didn't think there was much need for elaboration in that plan. Shadow, Rouge, Cream, Blaze and Silver just plumb don't appear, everyone just plumb stops using Chaos Control, and we just plumb never hear of Black Arms, GUN, Soleanna and ARK again. I'm not saying that's the creative direction I'd take, but it's certainly one I can get behind. I tried to fit the word 'plumb' into that last sentence. It just plumb wouldn't work.

Quite personally, I'm more curious how you plan to explain away five four games' worth of events. (I forgot one of them negated itself at the end.) Go back in time? It was all just a dream? I doubt it could be pulled off without using a plot device lamer than the stories you're overwriting. Plus the heat would be on to deliver. You're basically promising a game way better than Sonic Adventure 2, which whatever anyone's personal feelings may be, was critically well-received when it came out. I'd like to avoid whacking that hornet's nest and just leave it alone. Winter will kill it.

Sonic had a bad dream about some weirdo with long spikes and green eyes pretending to be him for about 20 games. He then woke up and proceeded to kick Dr. Robotnik's ass in the pleasing knowledge that Sonic Adventure and anything after it never happened. The End.
