11 Years

Post by Bo »

On this day in 1997, Green Gibbon! announced that his new project, the Green Hill Zone, was out of development.

That was 11 years ago. I finished college yesterday . I was just finishing 5th grade when I first started frequenting the GHZ. I was 11 at the time, and I'm 22 now (if my math is correct).

That means that for roughly 50% of my life, I've been discussing Sonic games with people on this site with some level of regularity.

I'm not sure whether this calls for a celebratory drink or a prescription for antidepressants.

In related news, while doing a search for "The GHZ" (on computers I was unable or too lazy to put bookmarks into), I noticed that the second most popular Google result is a 404 error.

The most awesome 404 error in existence, though, right? Right?

I started coming here shortly before the US DC release, so it's been almost 10 years for me (under the name Poke-A-Man). I often feel the same way as you, Bo, when it really sinks in.

I remember lurking around the site (and occasionally the forums before I registered proper) ever since that one year when Gibbon did the "Swimsuit" edition update...man, HOW many years ago was that?

I was seven when this site first showed up. It's not like I visited back then though. Heck, I'm not sure I even knew what the internet was! I started coming a few years later, though it wasn't one of my favorites since back then Sonic sites only consisted of fan fiction, Archie Comics, and cheat codes for me.

Didn't notice this until today. It would be nice if the front page updates (among other things) would get fixed.

Oh, and congrats on 11 years of anthropomorphic madness.

Suppose I ought to report this: When I noticed the credits on the S&T page were still listed as "Researching", I remembered a couple things I stumbled into on SMS Power:

http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7011 - This forum thread investigating what games Aspect had a hand in. They ran off a bunch of credits lists and, when you compare them, it's prolly possible to connect a few people to certain nicknames.

http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/Aspect - A page about Aspect at the "Game Developer Research Institute" that also has some of those lists, and a decent rundown of all the known games they've worked on. Can you believe they're still around? And apparently did the MSX2 Metal Gear ports in MGS3 Subsistence at that?

So, the GHZ is like one year older than the Dreamcast.... It bet he had a friends who owned nights and a Saturn or something...

I remember reading a croossover of Spawn, Darkness and Wichblade where the evil wizard ended with the decap head of the medieval Darkness and used it to live longer, Sega is doing the same thing porting Dreamcast games without even improving the graphic engine. That was ok like five or six years ago, but nowadays the difference is noticeable. Even the Wii has better graphics than the Dreamcast, and that’s the cheapest one…

I'm still waiting for the announcement that Shenmue IS receiving that Wii port.

But a Wii-powered JSR is fine too. More than fine, it'd be an instant buy.

Hey, slightly wacky question: how about that recent Wii port of Sega Bass Fishing? I'm sick of the lottery draw that is chasing potentially working/broken copies of the DC version around, and would be nice to know how this new version is. Assuming any of you have played it?

There are few copies of the Dreamcast version on eBay as of this post that are under "Buy It Now".

Can't speak from personal experience on the Wii version although I have heard that it is a realistic fishing simulator.

Same thing, and i'm not that desperate.

Realistic, ha. It's arcade fishing, so you're yanking them up one after the other. The closest attempts to realism it makes is changing weather conditions and a nature mode if you like it the good old "patient" way. If you have that demo disc that came with the DC, there's a (mercilessly short) 2 minute trial on that.
