You can hear it more clearly in the no-vocal version all over the place, but in this one at about the 2:18 mark it's pretty clear. At least, the thing that I hear in it is pretty clear.
I hear something similar, but the Angel Island theme is still the clearest to me.
It's less a question of what we're hearing, and more a question of why (if indeed it's one of the two tunes we narrowed it down to). I find it interesting how SEGA keeps making these minor references to the classic games when the most recent games show that they've got no intention of ever returning to that portrayal of Sonic. I mean, we get classic toys, classic plushies, and Sonic whistling classic songs in trailers... all before getting a new game that has him saving princesses and becoming a werewolf. What's the deal?

I hate to breakup this current conversation, but I didn't think Sonic was considered "popular" enough to be used for anything not Sega related: http://youtube.com/watch?v=DdZu4CbouN8
And I joke not when I say this, the tune Sonic is whistling sounds like the purple coin levels from Mario Galaxy. Of course that is not what it is, but it sounds like it to me.

Something about the way that came out made me lol.
What I don't get is why they're producing art right now, when we're not even 100% sure what his design's like. Kind of like when I tried drawing Shadow before I figured out what his design was, only to give him peach arms and a leather jacket with gold stripes at the edges.

The game's doomed. He said in the interview they'll be bringing Sonic back to his roots for the 1000th time. really if they haven't managed it yet how many more chances do they need?
