Meh, the amount of anime I've actually watched a significant portion of is pretty, well, slim. Yu Yu Hakusho, InuYasha, Case Closed, and Fullmetal Alchemist. Of which, FMA is the only one I actually finished, movie and all. I'd have kept on watching Case Closed despite its excessive run (apparently Detective Conan still airs new episodes in Japan... or did it stop finally?) had [adult swim] not seen fit to cancel it. Have they bothered to start airing new episodes on the Funimation channel (which I'd known of, but only recently found), or is what we got all we're getting?
A few movies and OVAs too, I guess, like the Sonic one and a few Studio Ghibli titles.
I also used to like Pokémon. Back when I was preteen.
PS: I never watched FLCL send me a dvd plz

A few old anime classics I recommend:
- Rose of Versailles
- Kodomo no Omocha
- Sakigake!! Otokojuku (recent discovery for me)
- Daicon IV (Youtube this one, it's pretty short)
- Popolocrois Monotagari (1998)
- Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (1998, and 2002 if you enjoy the first episodes)
Can't think of any others off the top of my head right now.
As for the issue of Digital Ink and Paint in animation, it's been both the best and worst thing to happen to the industry. While it has allowed companies to make a metric tonne of crappy moe blob and action animes for the sake of a quick buck, it has also allowed for such marvels of animation like Studio 4C's works, Gurren Lagann, Windy Tales, Kemonozume, the list goes on. Also, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IfjTvcm0nI
CGI films are dying creatively though. What with America's inability to create a movie without annoying animals.

I've recently got this feeling that GONZO's shaping up to be the Japanese animation counterpart of Electronic Arts; they shit out way too much products and only two or three manage to stand out or at least be worth watching. Also, you should watch Ao no Rokugo, GateKeepers and Last Exile.
I'm sure Hog'll be happy to know that there are another FOUR HUNDRED EPISODES AND COUNTING of Detective Conan, with some eleven or twelve movies and stuff. The little bastard has been poisoned for so long there's probably no way of returning him to normal. I enjoyed the series even though it had one of the worst possibly conceivable spanish dubs (mainly because it still retained all the bloody murdering and nice things), but looks like it got cancelled here too.
Yu Yu Hakusho was all good 'til I couldn't follow the series anymore because of the insane time slot Cartoon Network gave it (somewhere between 1:00 and 2:00 AM), then I just glanced at it from time to time.
As for Studio 4ºC, the last thing broadcasted down here was Utada Hikaru's Passion video clip; not much of actual animation, and even then it was quickly replaced by the truncated Kingdom Hearts II intro sequence. Sucks.
I want so bad to watch things like Mind Game and Tekkon Kinkreet, and it looks like they just recently released another anthology like Robot Carnival and Memories, called Genius Party... maybe I'll have to start buying fansubs again.
Also, Monster. I haven't seen Monster yet.
And please, first watch DaiCon III, then IV... then the lame Densha Otoko opening.

Search Youtube for "Fluximation". It'll bring up a collection of short pieces of animation from a collection of music videos by Utada Hikaru.Isuka wrote:As for Studio 4ºC, the last thing broadcasted down here was Utada Hikaru's Passion video clip
On the subject of Genius Party, it's looking good that they might have english subtitles on the Japanese DVD release, since the website has an english translation in parts, and one of the segments is directed by a Frenchman.
No one here mentioned Lain or Saint Seiya. Saint Seiya is amazingly moronic, but it does smell like childhood. Lain is just plain weird. I also kinda liked Super Pig in my teen years, but don't tell. Patlabor was kind of nice too, and the movies were sweet. Some old stuff I liked were Speed Racer and G-Force.
But what I really like are the movies. I like Katsuhito Otomo's movies like Steamboy, Memories and Akira, also Miyazaki has never failed me.
Evangelion is easily the best series I've seen so far, and I'm excited for the new movie.

Senbei my boy, no one got Akira, that's the cool thing about it. And yeah, Steamboy was quite pleasing for the eyes but rather shallow everywhere else (even music if I remember well).
I positively remember G-Force/ Gatchaman and Kotetsu Jeeg being THE shit when I was a kid, I need those right now. Super Pig was way too silly for me, Lain was booooring... and there's nothing I can say about Saint Seiya that hasn't been said a jillion times. Maybe that the new Megumu Okada manga is excellent?
And thanks for the tip OCB. Really.
EDIT: On those announced Evangelion movies; maybe we're looking at the next StH360, but I'll still hold some hope for this until the trailers show up.

... Well, trailers in general don't tell much lately, other than it's indeed a "rebuild". I'm still on the tightrope for the time being.
j, please refer to my bet-he-isn't-being-sarcastic list of crap (actually, it was the same with Swat Kats ;) ). Dead Leaves sounds great, gonna look for it later. And the only recent steampunk thing I know of is the aforementioned Last Exile. Oh, just watch Ergo Proxy and be done with that.

Er, the anime reinvention of Shichini no Samurai, "Samurai 7" is kind of, kind of interesting. You might say it hits all the right notes, but still doesn't play very well. It's got the bad-ass samurai, the steampunk cyborgs, the high technology next to feudal age architecture...but it somehow remains a little stagnant. It might be worth a try if you're just looking for some simple entertainment.j-man wrote:I'm big into steampunk. Someone suggest some relevant anime plix.
Nadia and The Big O are both pretty awesome, and Fullmetal Alchemist has some steampunk elements in it as well. There's also an anime called Steam Detectives which seems to fit the bill.j-man wrote:I'm big into steampunk. Someone suggest some relevant anime plix.
On another note, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei just might be the best anime to have come out since FLCL.

Well, he seems to be from Argentina too. Here the series wasn't cancelled, it was directly adapted from the original Japanese version and kept all the potentially controversial scenes (whichever they may be), for the whole 4 series/ seasons (don't know about the fifth one, it was announced for a premiere on early 2008, most probably on Jetix).
And I haven't seen a single series to sport shibari, suicide by hanging, hikikomori habits, early pregnancy and a general disregard for good taste, all in it's opening sequence. Pretty cool, Proto.
Maybe I should recommend Heat Guy J, but it's probably only my extreme bias towards Nobuteru Yuuki's character designs.

- Steam Detectives - Not too good, but still quite rad. Still need to finish this one actually.j-man wrote:I'm big into steampunk. Someone suggest some relevant anime plix.
- Escaflowne - More fantasy than anything.
- Read or Die - OVA in particular, hell, it's probably one of the best uses of Steampunk so far.
- Nadia: The secret of the Blue Water - Apparently. Haven't seen this one yet to know for sure.
- The Amazing Screw-On Head - Pretty absurd, but quite amusing. The writing is pretty good.
Similarly, i'm a massive fan of Steampunk, but more on the realistic side of things, i.e not robots which occasionally vent steam. As a result, i loved Steamboy, although i do recognise that it's a pretty poor movie.
On that note, apparently there's talk of a sequel series or movie to Steamboy.
Nowadays I’m watching "Planet survivor" is like Digimon first season without the monsters partners, so that makes it a bit better. Because the humans are the ones who have to survive, without any help of Digimon, sure they have a pet robot cat since the beginning and an alien kid after a few episodes, but is still a good show. And is also 52 episodes, first they are stuck in an island and then they go to the continent... and so on...

Apologies to Isuka. That's what I get for scan-reading in the early ay-ems. ;_;
Dead Leaves is more awesome than it sounds. It's even possibly more awesome than it is, and that doesn't even make sense! But then, neither does Dead Leaves, so... here we are.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I've already read some of the Steam Detectives manga and it was pretty good, so I hope I can track down the anime.
Except when I can't be bothered.

Ah, I won't show you any of my drawings then. I do feel where you're coming from, though, and as such I usually try to incorporate functional principles of mechanics and hydraulics into the robots I design.OCB wrote:Similarly, i'm a massive fan of Steampunk, but more on the realistic side of things, i.e not robots which occasionally vent steam

Then clearly, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is right for you. Watch it and understand what it means to pierce the heavens.j-man wrote:Also, Dead Leaves is the shit.

Yeah. Shame it was only one episode, with seemingly no plans to continue producing more. One Classy Bloke wrote: - The Amazing Screw-On Head - Pretty absurd, but quite amusing. The writing is pretty good.
