SEGA ANNOUNCES SONIC RUSH ADVENTURE FOR THE NINTENDO DS
Sequel to Critically-Acclaimed Sonic Rush is now in Development
LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (April 16, 2007) - SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America Inc. today announced the development of Sonic Rush Adventure™ for the Nintendo DS™ system. Sonic Rush Adventure will seamlessly utilise both screens of the Nintendo DS to navigate the high seas in search of pirate treasure, delivering Sonic’s classic high-speed 2D gameplay in the ultimate Sonic handheld experience. Developed by SEGA Studios, Sonic Rush Adventure for the Nintendo DS will be available in Autumn 2007.
Sonic returns to the Nintendo DS in an all-new frantic adventure complete with dizzying dives, near vertical curves and brain twisting loops. Sonic Rush Adventure will retain the DS action that fans loved so much from Sonic Rush™, as well as providing a new high seas adventure where Sonic clashes with ruthless pirates. Players will set off from Windmill Village as Sonic and blast their way through seven action-packed and widely diverse levels. Sonic Rush Adventure will make full use of the DS Download Play feature and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which enables gamers to compete with friends in wireless racing and mission-based battles.
Guide Sonic through numerous action stages in the fast and furious single player mode, whilst collecting valuable items and materials that enable Sonic and Tails to track down the villainous pirates. With a fleet of up to five ships, including a submarine, water bike and hovercraft, Sonic Rush Adventure uses the Touch Screen technology in exciting new ways. Use the Nintendo DS Stylus to help control vessels as they race across the ocean gathering rings, performing tricks, and torching pirate boats, whilst engaging in fierce ship-to-ship battles. At the end of each level, epic 3D boss battles spanning both screens will test gamers skills to result in an ultimate showdown with the evil boss character, Captain Whisker.
Sonic Rush Adventure allows players to bounce, fly, swing, ride and run through grand environments of lush forests, an ominous ghost ship, snow covered mountains, pirate villages and a vast underwater sea cave. Along the way there will be a variety of enemy characters to battle against including robots, skeleton warriors, pterodactyls, and a robotic triceratops.

Not sure I'm digging these screen shots quite yet. They look very basic and seem to lack a whole lot of detail. Infact the loop is very similar to Sonic Advance 2 in its style, and I hope the Rush series isn't going to follow the same stylistic transition as the Advance series, because 2 and 3 blew. Of course it's still early days, so I reserve judgement until a later date, but some of the gameplay elements seem pretty interesting.

That said, it really looks like just Sonic Rush 2.

I mean, gameplay-wise, the core Sonic Rush gameplay looks like it'll be the same, but I'm not sure for the boss battles. Maybe now this enters official art category?

'Whisker'... how could it be that I didn't think of that before?

It's very possible that Sonic Rush Adventure follows the Story of Sonic and the Secret Rings. So, Dimps is not working on this one? The plot and the Theme shocked me totally when I read about this game, but since Sonic Rush is my most favorite game ever, I am very excited about this one! I just now have a problem. Before this announcement, I counted the main games of the Sonic Series like this:
01. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Mega Drive)
02. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sega Mega Drive)
03. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
04. Sonic Adventure
05. Sonic Adventure 2
06. Sonic Advance
07. Sonic Advance 2
08. Sonic Advance 3
09. Sonic Rush
10. Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)
I called all the others spin-offs. Now, if Sonic Rush Adventure is following the Story of Sonic and the Secret Rings, I either have to count Sonic Rush a spin-off too, or count Sonic and the Secret Rings a main Sonic Game.

http://www.sega.com have some additional details. It confirms that there will be 2 acts per level, as with Sonic Rush, and there's also going to be a snowboarding section apparently. Incidentally, I am really glad that this is a single player game (so far at least), this was one of my few gripes with the original game, because I disliked playing as some new soulless character, especially through the same stages as Sonic. I also like the way Tails is included in the game in a supporting role, and it looks as if he has a real reason to be here too, making these vehicles for Sonic (similar to the olden says ). I have to say everything is looking pretty positive right now.

Sonic Battle is not a main game because it's not a Jump 'n' Run and Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog are not main games because you can't play as Sonic alone. Sonic and the Secret Rings is a Jump 'n' Run and you can play as Sonic alone, but it's game mechanics are so unique, I rather not count it as a main game.
Some high res art of Sonic and Captain Whiskers.

I am largely unimpressed by the water texture, but those special stages look like a step in the right direction.
As done to death as pirates are, I like to think that Secret Rings taught them how much a central theme adds to the game. Especially when coming up with some characteristic levels. If I saw another green level / water level / casino level / ice level / mechanical level formula I would have shed a tear. But just one.
Really, I can't be just doling these things out.

Yes, but Sonic is MAINLY an action platformer. I'd say every Sonic game which is not an action platformer is not a main Sonic game. Well, it's of course nothing official or something, but just the way I see it.
Chaotix doesn't even feature Sonic as a playable Character, so, no. Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog (MS/GG), Sonic the Hedgeog 2 (MS/GG), Sonic & Tails, Sonic & Tails 2 and unfortunately Sonic Blast (I hate this game) could be added in the list, too, especially Sonic CD, since it features Amy, who is a very important Character for the Series. The reason why I didn't count them as main games is that these games came out in a time when Sonic games where numbered. We had Sonic 1 for MD, Sonic 2 for MD and Sonic 3 to build the main games of the series. If for example Sonic CD was a main game, it would have been called Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 would have been called Sonic 4. So, I rather not call those games main games.

13 year old sonic fans who hate the fact that Secret Rings has on-rails gameplay need to stop labeling it as a spin off. It's not. Despite what Wikipedia says.
It scares me that you would rather include a game like sonic 360 in your list of "true" sonic games than the one 3d sonic game in years that happens to be decent. A game can change its gameplay style and not be a spin off.
edit : oh and also, Im not to hot on the idea of a new villian. Especially one that is basically a robot eggman. I welcome the idea of sea faring exploration based gameplay though. Kind of. Looks a bit too much like Wind Waker though.
