Grindhouse: Planet Terror and Death Proof
Grindhouse: Planet Terror and Death Proof
I saw this last night in a packed house. This seems like the sort of movie that would be perfect for a drive-in, but seeing it in a little college town in Bowling Green, Ohio was the next best thing.
I had fun the whole way through. Really, it didn't feel so much like going to see a movie as much as it felt like going to an event. The hilarious Machete trailer going right into Planet Terror set the mood of the night so goddamn perfectly. I can't talk enough about the atmosphere Grindhouse creates. I mean, you're in there with your fellow movie-goers for three-and-a-half hours and everyone's on the same page; the films are made to provoke crowd reactions - there was a lot of laughter, some "eww"s and even applause breaks with Death Proof. By the time you're leaving, you get the same kind of feeling as when you leave a really good concert: everyone's grinning and it kinda feels like you have some sort of connection with the strangers around you.
The other trailers were fun too, except I was kind of let down by Rob Zombie's, but that might be my own fault as I had really built that one up in my head after hearing the title. Eli Roth's Thanksgiving trailer was probably the best one.
On the whole, Planet Terror is more fun than Death Proof, although the latter's high points are maybe the best parts of the double feature. The kitschy things in both, like the missing reels and scratched film, were used well and added to the feel of the night (more effectively in Planet Terror, though, I think).
Absolutely go see this and soon - I strongly believe seeing it with as many people as possible is the only way to do it. It's too bad you guys not in the States won't get this as a double feature. I can't imagine seeing it any other way and especially without the faux trailers!

See, when I first saw the TV commercials, I thought the two movies were directly related. Eg: Ms. Amputee there in Planet Terror lost her leg because she was in an accident related to Mr. "This car is death proof, but only if you're in my seat!" there. Sadly, the two movies apparently aren't related like that.
Anyway, hyper-violent movies aren't exactly my thing, just yet. Plus I can truthfully say that I have never, not once in my life, seen a movie made by Quentin Tarantino. Not one. It's something I should amend, I know... I was thinking of fixing that with Pulp Fiction, maybe.

I haven't seen Jackie Brown or Reservoir Dogs, but of the ones I have seen, Pulp Fiction is definitely the best. Not that you can really compare Kill Bill with Pulp Fiction, they aren't really comparable in anyway aside from being movies.
You know a movies good when just about every line in it is quotable though.
