Odin Sphere--Hot 2D RPG Action!

Post by Ngangbius »

In the late 90's, Vanillaware and Atlus released a Sega Saturn game called Princess Crown, which was a side-scrolling, action-RPG. The game sported some nice sprite graphics at the time and the combat seemed to resemble a fighting game. Unfortunately, it never came to the U.S. Fastforward eight years later, and Atlus ports Princess Crown to the PSP, and that too did not see a U.S. release because of SCEA's douchebaggery.

Now, Atlus announces a sequel to the game--Odin Sphere! It's for the PS2 but thankfully it is coming to North America. Joy!

I would attempt to discuss the 2D beauty of this game, but I think it would be better to let the screenshots speak for themselves:

More Screenshots is available one the official webpage(check out that Sakimoto score): http://www.atlus.com/odinsphere/

You can also see it in action with this video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lU8zyH7XP5Q

Features from this game include and I quote:
Gorgeous hand-drawn artwork and animations!

Intense side-scrolling action with astonishing attacks and magic effects!

Fully-voiced dialogue that heightens the drama!

Fantastic bosses that tower over the protagonists!

Five playable characters in all; each one’s fate is intertwined with the others’!

A robust cooking and alchemy system that can be used to create powerful attack and recovery items!
The English version game comes out this Spring which is supposedly around the same time or earlier as the Japanese version. Good to see Atlus is making progress with this release. This is one of my most anticipated games of this year. =)

Sounds like a side-scrolling Seiken Densetsu 3.

I actually had Princess Crown. I got about halfway through despite not being able to read a lick of Japanese. Happier days, those.

I saw Odin Sphere but I didn't know it was meant to be a sequel.

Wow, uh, that looks good. Does it look as good in motion as it does in stills?

Cool. Amazing 2D, but the anime characters look like they were taken out of a girls blog.

Those kings look pretty cool though. Specially the second one, with the big nose.

Odin was a man, not a sphere.

The style reminds me of the great Russian animator, Yuri Norstein. I like the look of this.

I like the art but I don't like how the gameplay looks. I like my sidescrollers fast and brainless.

I like the art....not really a fan of RPGs. I would LOVE to see a fighter with this kind of art!
