|chicken| |turkey| cos(theta)

or

|turkey| |chicken| cos(theta)

But I don't see the double meaning.

Well I originally made that joke, but it isn't a "chicken/turkey" joke but a "chicken x turkey" joke. See it's this hilarious pun because I'm using "cross" as "cross product" rather then as "mate." See the double meaning makes it funny. The mathematical content makes it awesome. And the fact that it is high-level math makes it exclusionary. It's all around a very fantastic joke, trumped only by Light Speed's *snicker* avatar.

Yeah. I'm studying maths at University and I don't have a clue what that avatar is about.

(Ok, it is only first year computing maths, but it's still bloody hard. And "Come ooonnnnnn!")

Well I'll give you a hint. Light Speed is a phyics major, not a math major.

I only just got the pun, but I have to compliment Light Speed on it anyway. Clever.

I still don't get it totally, but at least it stops me thinking that Lightspeed was actually an ape.

Fuck you, but bonus points for saying "fiver". <3

Ah, see, I always say "multiply" or "times", so I didn't get it. I guess we can chalk the confusion up to grammatical differences, then.

But seriously. Light Speed's avatar. STOP FUCKING ABOUT NOW AND TELL ME PLZ

Well it's terminology you will get to know intimately if you take physics, linear algebra or advanced calculus. "Cross product" or "cross multiplication" is multiplying two vectors to yield a third vector that is perpendicular to both. You use the right hand rule to figure out in which direction this vector points. The multiplication is denoted by an "x."

This is opposed to the "dot product" or "dot multiplication" which uses this "*" and gets a scalar quantity. I forgot all the applications of the dot product, but I'm sure they're important.

So when you get high enough there are actually four kinds of multiplication: scalar on scalar, scalar on vector, vector on vector (dot), and vector on vector (cross).

---

And about Lightspeed's avatar:

mu-nought and epsilon-nought are the two constants.

It might help them more to say that they are the permeability and permittivity constants. Also know as the Magnetic and Electric constants respectively.

I would have told them that if I understood the theory behind it. As it is, I only understand the mathematics.
