I think it mostly just satifsfies the teenage market most RPGs are played by.

It's kind of depressing that I'm now older than most RPG characters, though.

Because that's the target audience. Say you're a sixteen year old boy; would you rather play a teenage boy who saves the world, or as someone your father's age who saves the world?

I would not play as the boy at all given the option; I would play as the girl. That's what I did when I started up Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast.

Is it because you feel sexually frustrated? Like you're not really a boy, but something else trapped in a boy's body?

I'd rather be the middle aged, mysterious guy. More experience and the ability to be a smartass.

It's because all Japanese RPG heroes are anime characters, and anime characters are never older than 19, except some occasional NPC. Apparently your hair turns normal colors and stops standing on-end after age 20.

It's because I don't like male RPG leads, and because ever since FFVIII, most of them are either moody guys with a sword, or annoying guys with overinflated egos with a sword (notice there's always a sword). Alex from Lunar, Meis from Thousand Arms, and Ness from Mother 2 are the only ones I like.

Play Skies of Arcadia.

Seeing as this thread is well on its way off topic anyway, I was wondering if anyone happened to pick up Shining Tears? It's not something I've been anticipating, looking as generic as you please, but I'm still curious to hear some impressions.

I played the demo of Shining Tears that came with last month's OPM. The 2d backgrounds are pretty nice looking, they kind of remind me of SaGa Frontier 2's graphics. The character sprites however, aren't that great... While I don't mind that they're superdeformed, they're kind of un-detailed and the animation isn't that smooth.

Or maybe games like Stella Deus and GGX2 have forever spoiled 2d games for me. Suddenly, if 2d sprites aren't drawn in ultra high-resolution, I no longer find them impressive.

Anyway, I found the gameplay kind of simple (in the demo, at least)... You basically run around and tap square to beat the shit out of enemies. It's kind of entertaining in a Dynasty Warriors sort of way, as it's always you and your partner versus like, twenty badguys.

I hear the game is better on 2 player co-op (single player forces you to control your partner with the 2nd analog stick), but from what I played, it was pretty mediocre. It's the type of game that I'll buy as soon as the price drops below 20 bucks.

Play Skies of Arcadia.
This applies to everyone who has not played it. A Gamecube is $100, a functioning Dreamcast is around $30. Go out and get one just for this game. It is that good.

Well it's stupid. If I made an RPG you would have to play someone at least 35 years old.
