Sad news....Deem Bristow(Eggman's VA) has passed away...

Post by J.E.Smith »

Ryan Drummond himself passed the sad news to a close friend and Sonic fan yesterday. This is on most of the major Sonic news sites I visit, and I don't see anything on it here at all, so here you go...
Hey Jen,
Ryan here. How are you, my dear? Listen, we've
had a tragedy over here in SoCal, and you're the
first "fan"-type person I've let know about it.
DEEM BRISTOW, voice of Dr. Robotnik, your
favorite, my friend and co-worker, sadly died
last Saturday night. Here is the copy from the
E-card I got from Lani Minella:

"It is with great sorrow and shock that I tell
you about a great loss. Deem Bristow passed away
last night (1/15/05), collapsing at a singles
dance and dying shortly thereafter at Sharp
hospital. His mother says he loved the beach and
California so much, he will probably be "buried
at sea." An autopsy is being done and he was an
organ donor so just his corneas and some bone and
tissue will be taken to help others. His mother,
Peg, will try and let me know what we might be
able to do for her and I will pass on information
once I have it.
We will miss Deem very much and this was a
devasting shock. Feel free to contact me if you
have any ideas about a tribute or something we
can do."

So there you have it. The funeral is Saturday
monrning, the 22nd, at 11am (P.S.T.). That might
be when you're reading this. I'll be there
passing on my respects, please feel free to
attend in spirit from wherever you are.
Could you do me a favor? I haven't put
anything out to any of the SONIC sites about
this. Do you think you could spread the word in
the SONIC community for me? Just post a little
something (feel free to cut and paste from this
email if you want) and tell everyone to "pass it
on". Deem was so great as the voice of Eggman,
and I know alot of fans will be saddened to hear
that we won't be hearing his great voice again.
Play a round of your favorite Sonic game in his
honor today!

Love and respect,
Ryan Drummmond

Well this sucks. Deem's kickass Eggman voice was one of the big highlights of the English voice cast. Knowing Sega they'll probably slap some lame imitator in the next game(Although I hear that Mike Pollock, the voice of Eggman in the dub of Sonic X has been notified of the news. He says he's willing to do the voice in the games if Sega asks him)

Shame his last hurrah as Eggman had to be Sonic Heroes.

He was the only decent voice actor out of the lot of them. 'Tis a shame.

I guess he was pretty young, then? That'd be a great pickup line, too, "Hey, y'know, I'm the voice of Dr. Eggman." I'd go home with him in two seconds flat, and I'm straight.

Seriously, though, his will be a tough act to follow. When Sonic Adventure came out years ago, I was probably more pleased with Eggman's voice than anyone's.

I only just found out about it. (This definitely should be on the Newsboard, hence the move of the topic). My sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Deem Bristow.

Didn't the last VA for Eggman die, too? I could've sworn one actor did the voice for SA1 and SA2, then died - then was replaced for Sonic Heroes.

I'm starting to feel bad for playing the game with the Japanese dialogue. This is sad news to hear.

This is sucks, but let's remember him for what he did... He also did the voice of Dogs from Blue Stinger and his voice is going to be in Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth this year so maybe that will have a nice little tribute... It's sad, now two SA voices are dead, first Steve Sheppard-Brodie (the voice of Gamma and the President) now Deem Bristow... But atleast they will leave behide the legacy of some of the better game voice acting of recent years, since not only did SA give 3D to Sonic but also decent voices... I know this is a little off topic but isn't it wierd that the guy who does Big's voice also does Duke Nukem's...

If I remember correctly, it was the voice actor for Gamma who died, but the person who reported his death incorrectly thought he was the actor of Eggman.

Oh hey, I found this site. If anyone's interested, you can see a pic of the man himself, along with all the other actors for Eggman. Some of them sure are a-funny lookin' critters.

I think it was in the Chao Garden when he pet(ted) a Chao in SA2. That was the best one, anyway.

It was also when you cleared a stage(Before the score tally) or got a weak combo score.

But yeah, out of respect for Deem I suggest playing through the Eggman stages and watching the Dark Side Story cutscenes of SA2 with the English vocals on(With the Eggman menu theme on if you have SA2:B). That's what I'm doing anyways.

Shun Yashiro, the original Japanese voice of Big, also died a couple of years ago. He was pretty old though, like in his 70's or something.

Hey, I was just wondering have you ever thought of just making a lasting tribute page on the site... I bet you could even get most of the grunt work done by people around here, myself included... You know just putting an idea out there...

I do a pretty good impression of the late Bristow. I use it in respect every time and I'll use it in mourning from now on.

*salutes*

Que ele descanse em paz...

Now, talking about Sonic series dubbers, I think it would be a nice idea to include a section at the GHZ about them. You know, with biographies, pictures, other works, that kind of stuff.

Damnit! I thought he'd died once and was relieved to find out he hadn't. Now he has and I almost cried when I found out. He was The voice of Eggman, I can't see how they'll replace him. Mr Bristow will be missed
