More E3 Pictures including SMC+ logo
Sega of Japan has posted pictures of all of Sonic Team's playable E3 games in its E3 report:
<img border=0 src="http://sega.jp/event/report/2004e3/photo08.jpg" />
^ It's the logo for Sonic Mega Collection Plus. Sega were keen to emphasise that the Plus suffix is a sign of new content, but the exact details of the extras are being kept secret for the moment.

<img border=0 src="http://sega.jp/event/report/2004e3/photo07.jpg" />
^ Here the PC version of Sonic Heroes is being compared to the GC original

<img border=0 src="http://sega.jp/event/report/2004e3/photo04.jpg" /> <img border=0 src="http://sega.jp/event/report/2004e3/photo13.jpg" />
^ More pictures of Astro Boy and Sega Super Stars

<img border=0 src="http://sega.jp/event/report/2004e3/photo19.jpg" />
^ A very odd looking picture of Sonic DS
<img border=0 src="http://sega.jp/event/report/2004e3/photo21.jpg" />
^ The announcement of Phantasy Star Universe received a great applause

A few other Sonic related pictures have also been posted:
<img border=0 src="http://sega.jp/event/report/2004e3/photo20.jpg" />
^ Naka-san signing autographs

<img border=0 src="http://sega.jp/event/report/2004e3/photo15.jpg" /> <img border=0 src="http://sega.jp/event/report/2004e3/photo16.jpg" />
^ USA Sonic goods

<img border=0 src="http://sega.jp/event/report/2004e3/photo14.jpg" />
^ If you didn't get the joke from yesterday's shorts, this image should make it clearer.

Is that really Sonic DS? I still think it's just a tech demo.

Aha. So SMC+ and Heroes PC WERE on the show floor. I was beginning to think that those were just rumors.

I thought it was already stated as a tech demo. I mean a whole game that involves rubbing the screen to move Sonic would be stupid. Maybe though, they could get away with that if it was designed as a Special Stage.

However, there were many groans that came with the announcement of The Matrix Online.

Wait, they sold SA-era T-Shirts in the U.S.?

Has anybody here actually seen these in their local supermarket or drugstore? None of the stores here carry these bars--not even our local Wal-Mart or Target. And if you ate them, were they good?

When translated in Amikai, the original caption accompanying the picture in the SoJ report read as"The SONIKKU goods put on the market in United States."

It is. They are working on something for the DS, but that ain't it.

Good, because the game/tech demo looks like crap.

And what kind of 'new content' could this Sonic Mega Collection Plus have? I'm suspecting it's the Saturn edition of 3D Blast or the insertion of Knuckles Chaotix, but I might be wrong.

It was probably in a VIP area. Sega's had a closed booth every year since 2001, I think.

Oh well.

This Sonic DS game looks very intesting. The graphics look great compared to that Super Mario 64x4 game.

There were all of these rumors about Sega possibly getting back into hardware. I knew they would almost certainly be false, but there was so much discussion at other message boards that I almost believed it, hoping against hope. I almost cried when all they had to show was The Matrix Online. Damn you, Sega.

That would be horrible. They can't even make good games, anymore. Why are they still a company?

Well, now Sammy is with them to screw things up even more. If they were to release a new console, I would definitely be in line to buy it, even though I'd probably get burned in the end. Why? Quoting Penny Arcade, "I am a consumer whore."

And I have an unhealthy Dreamcast fetish.

From what I heard that all this "SEGATON!!1" bull was started by a bunch of overzealous Sega fanboys over the internet--just like Ninty fanboys proclaimed that there was to be a Nintendo MEGATON announcement last year.

I guess the moral of the story is don't give in to any "MEGATON" rumors on the net. You'll set yourself up for a big disappointment.

Don't blame the fanboys. Sega said it in their own words, "an explosive announcement NOBODY will be able to guess". That's a strong statement which obviously would breed those sorts of rumors.

Well, they were right. I never would have guessed that it was the craptaculous Matrix Online. Wasn't that game all hyped up and stuff... Two years ago?

I think they're having a lot of trouble hyping it all, actually.

I too would rather Sega stayed out of the hardware side of things. I'm pretty sick of having to buy so many different boxes (each doing the same damn thing) to play all the games I want... isn't about time we got some kind of single console that played everything? Despite the obvious economic impossibilities and such.

Economic and business impossibilities, you mean? There's no way it would work with just one platform provided by one company, because then there'd be no competition and we as a consumer would be screwed <I>anyway</I> because there wouldn't be any precedent for reasonable pricing.

That's the problem with games, they rely too much on technology.

DVDs are just DVDs, they can work in any player (ignoring region encoding and such for a moment) and any number of companies can manufacture DVD players. Same with every format of music or video ever.

Of course I'd rather have multiple consoles than all of this PC gaming and upgrading nonsense.

There'd still be conflicts, though. Even if there were a universal "console" standard, there would be a bunch of different companies manufacturing the same hardware, each with slightly different features. And how would we know when to move on? Standards like VCRs and DVDs last as much as two decades, but game consoles shift every 5 years. A universal console would mean the end of clean-cut "generations" and we'd be down to upgrading.

So basically, a universal console would be a PC, which I ain't down with.
