I've actually played the game, you dicks! It wasn't great. I'll probably still buy it, though; after the whole 'redesigned Lost Labyrinth' fiasco, I still retain some hope that they're patching it up into something resembling a quality product. Also, it's cheap. Also, I'm a masochist.

Something everyone needs to remember is that nobody has played the finished product. When the PartnerNet build leaked, the game was still six months off release. When I played it, it was the E3 demo from three months ago (four, now). Game's not coming out 'til November, at least. I'll give the dev team the benefit of the doubt, if not my money.

I can't believe we've gone through so much time and so much debating / drama over a four-Zone game. It's really kind of confusing in retrospect.

Four zones?! It has 25 levels!

Separating the boss into its own act counts as another level each time. The bonus stages count as levels. The last boss counts as a level. Something secret I cannot figure out counts as a level.

Also! You get to enjoy 3 normal acts per level just like Sonic 1! This is not Sonic Team being too lazy to design new environments, this is what you wanted.

Where did you get the number 4? That new gamepro preview says at least 5. Its a pretty disappointing stat but hey, we always said we wouldn't mind a short game right?

Pretty sure it comes from the age old leak which showed Splash Hill, Lost Labyrinth, Cosmic Casino (or something?) and Grand Metropolis as being the 4 levels in the menu. They're probably counting the special stage or the boss attack as an extra stage.

Yeah, I don't even remember how to do that anymore.

Still, I'll buy it.

If this game is essentially a Sonic 1 remake, does that mean they're only trying to make it as good as Sonic 1? It really has to work otherwise they'll have nowhere else to go..

And what about the music? For all those youtubers who've been cleverly remixing Sonic 3&K tunes with GaGa etc. it seems clear that the music is also cleanly divided as high quality old-school music and the generic crap post-Adventure music.

I have these:

Maybe having decent music is a less obvious ingredient to a good Sonic game that they should also consider? (When they optimise the actual gameplay to what it was like... before even mobile telephones were common...)

I got to play the demo at PAX myself. Yeah, making you unroll every time you hit the top of a hill and go into the air ruins everything. Can hardly attempt a pinball style multi-bounce attack anymore.

That's a very good point, I'd never noticed before but that's actually pretty obviously one of the key problems.

I can only assume the decision is related to the homing attack, having Sonic unroll so that while he's in the air he can commence a homing attack on nearby enemies.

I do specifically remember it always being unsatisfying in the old games when you came out of a fast section and were launched into the air and WEREN'T spinning.

I'm still wondering why I'm interested in this. There's no news of a PC version, or at least a compilation with every episode...

Yeah, in retrospect I'm glad my parent's finally caved in when S3&K was compiled on a reasonably priced disk. They even picked up Sonic CD PC while they were at it! That was a wonderful, wonderful day.

Did the CD only came with S3&K?

Yep! That meant I missed out on Knuckles in Sonic 2 well until Mega Collection came out. 'Course that spared me the Egg Mecha battle.

Also, omit that apostrophe in 'parents'. I was on such a roll, too.

Wait, was it this pack?

Because I don't remember S3&K being released as a single retail disc. Or maybe I just missed it.

P.S: Sorry for the off-topic.

My parents wouldn't let me have a console so I had that 2 pack too. I pretty much ignored sonic CD though. Something about the music and loading screen really creeped me out.

It wasn't until later that I eventually bought a saturn (at the very tail end of its life) with sonic jam. Which was amazing.

I have to wonder how many of our bitter, CLASSIC members actually played Sonic 1 first.

Hey, there's a poll for you!

well just because I didn't own it, doesn't mean I didn't play sonic 1 or 2 first. My first sonic experience was actually with Sonic 2 at a friends house. So there.

Hey man, growing up alls I had was a NES and a Genesis, the latter of which was bundled with Sonic 1. So it was my first one. Somehow we got Sonic 2 as well. In fact, I'm pretty sure I played them all in release order.

Nope, Sonic 2 for the Game Gear. And Sonic 2 for the Genesis, out of the ones that were actually good. (Technically got 1, 2 and 3 at the same time, but I played 2 at a Blockbuster Video demo unit before ever getting a Genesis. And there you have it.)
