Not possible. They already have the Sonic & Knuckles ROM there, as well as the other relevant ROMs. All you have to do to get the lock-on ROMs is append the ROM to be locked-on to the end of the S&K one. This takes all of two minutes to do, if that, and doesn't require any fancy tools - the Windows command line can do this natively, for Christ's sake.

There is literally no excuse for this BS.

At least Sonic 1 has moving clouds this time, I noticed it in the trailer.

For XBLA, they used the first version.

Now kick back and watch, as some panicy programmer realizes they put a (J) ROM in a western-made game collection and "fix" that.

Honestly, I've long wondered why they didn't (don't) release S3&K on Virtual Console for Wii.

SEGA and Nintendo cannot figure out how to lock them together, it is just too complex in today's modern gaming world.

On a more related note, it's almost cruel that they're flaunting the information in front of us. Almost a, "No, we didn't forget, we just hate you" sort of deal.

Maybe you just have to play both games 30 times each.

...Or maybe just load all the games you don't want to play 50 times each.

Or maybe you have a save game of Sonic 06.

It really wouldn't kill me if they just had Sonic 3 and Knuckles available from the start, and didn't include separate Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles games.

They confirmed it is not there.

They lied and said there was not enough development time to do it. Putting another ROM on the disc is just too time consuming when you have stuff like Super Thunder Blade to worry about.

Did this come from a Backbone employee or a rep?

It came from a SEGA rep saying it came from a Backbone employee.

I noticed people were saying that they did it on purpose as they plan to release the full game on XBLA. That might be it, as "Sonic 3" is on ESRB for 360. Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 sold good there, so Microsoft might be letting them do that.

Does not make much sense for PS3, but not much does.

SOA's blog has the alleged quote.
Edward@Sega wrote:I spoke with the producer for Sonic’s UGC, Ethan Einhorn, who definitely understands the nature of hard-core Sonic fandom. We had a good conversation about the game, and I got Ethan’s official explanation for why Sonic 3 + Knuckles wasn’t included: “To shore up the development time necessary to get “Lock-On” to work in Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, we would have had to drop all of the bonus games from the disc. Faced with an either/or scenario, we chose to retain our title lineup in its entirety.”

In other words, that would have meant losing the Sega Master System ports (Phantasy Star and Golden Axe Warrior) and all of the arcade ports. Just throwing an old ROM into a game is one thing, but combining lots of different types of ROM technology (arcade, Genesis, Master System) and making them all work together is another, and to get the game out with this lineup, that’s what needed to happen.
Also, he made a meme reference. These marketing guys really know their stuff.
Edward@Sega wrote:I think he has Tails (currently VP of Hovering and Market Research) spearheading a port of Sonic R for it (rumors that the Tails Doll from that game was hard-coded into the motherboard of the SG-1000 years before the release of the first Sonic game are totally unsubstantiated).

Still bullshit. There's no "getting Lock-On to work". S3&K is just another ROM to throw in. No time needed.

They could have just did Sonic 3+K as one ROM, instead they do twice the 'work' by doing both seperately.

Backbone are extremely stupid.

I was surprised to hear that this collection was compiled by Backbone. This is the same Backbone that made Death Junior and Sonic Rivals, right? I've never heard of them doing any game collections before...

Oh, they did all the Mega Drive titles for Xbox Live, as well as a lot of other downloadable games. Both conversions and a couple of original titles I think.

Digital Eslipse, Backbone, et cetera are all part of the same company now. As a whole, they have been doing this since the Saturn. They are all companies with several different offices, so it is not like there is just one group called 'Backbone'.

Backbone also uses the emulators made by others, I think (Digital Eclipse).

Just look up Foundation 9 to see the company's stuff (they own Shiny and Sumo too).

Outrun Online Arcade has only not been given a definite release date yet because they're secretly porting Outrunners as an unlockable. You heard it here first!!! Yeah, I wish.
