The fact that the game takes place in the Middle Ages initially put me off even more than even the sword, as it's among the most bland and uninspired settings ever to exist in any medium, but the game's art direction has exceeded my wildest expectations: what we've been shown so far is, hands down, the most visually unappealing 3D Sonic level to date, and I'm sure the rest of the game will follow suit.

So anyway, I think you might have Mad Cow Disease. You should do something about that.

Amen to that brother

Those environment shots could be from any game. ever. At least the castles on some kind of floating island ma jigger.

I should have clarified: the textures and lighting effects are very impressive (for some reason) to me. Other than that, yes, the game so far looks like each level will look exactly the same, will be comprised totally of gray and is totally unappealing in that all the surroundings are totally boring and square shaped. In fact what prompted me to make my misleading previous statement was that one shot of water running through a tunnel, and that could just be because it reminds me of cannons core from SA2.

When Secret Rings was first shown, everyone complained that every level would be brown desert. I'm sure this is just the first stage.

It's still ugly, both from art direction and technical standpoints. Sonic Unleashed looks nice. This does not.

If we're lucky, then there'll be more pirate stuff. If we're lucky.

I usually like medieval settings. Even in Sonic games; Kingdom Valley for example. But this here is just... bland and generic. I hope the other levels will be a bit more surreal.

If its on Rails I wont touch this game, glad Unleash isnt.

Secret Rings was a nightmare, control wise.

It looks like it is on rails, but that the left and right control is now responsibility of the control stick, not the critically underdeveloped waggle. Of course, it could always be a straight-on 3D/2D platformer like Unleashed, but I somehow doubt it.

Man what is wrong with you guys? It's one thing to complain about secret rings sucking, but every other sonic fan on the internet seems to have some kind of personal vendetta against on rails gameplay in general. Sonic unleashed isn't on rails for chrissakes, can't this game be?

As someone who comes from a country that actually has castles in it, I really hope they put some work into tarting up the scenery. They've got a rich tapestry (lol) of ideas to work from. Other than that, looks okay-ish. I'm cautiously excited in a strange, mid-nineties kind of way.

You can at least use the joystick instead of Excite-Trucking it. That's an improvement in my book.

I'm not sure about this one. Unleashed asks you to get past the werewolf. Once you do, it comes off as purposefully campy and there's a lot of pretty levels and interesting gameplay there. Here, there's getting past the sword... equally campy, but there isn't much else unique underneath it. I fear that's gonna gut what gutted Shadow; everything is all dark and plodding, interspersed with bursts of circus-robot levels and Charmy and Amy as sidekicks. The fact this is the Secret Rings brigade brings hope since they knew how to play Sonic to his strengths and similarities with the topic at hand, but Sonic doesn't go with everything. I stand by my point that this could be glorious, fun overkill, but this also runs the risk of taking itself too seriously and losing its head up its own ass.

It doesn't matter what the game looks or whatever. It's the wrong animal holding that sword. Where the hell is Sparkster? Heck, even Wonder Boy would suffice. Or Gillius Thunderhead. I'd prefer if it was Tails holding that sword (like those awful comic series of him from the UK), then it would be a lot easier to ignore.

I couldn't find any hilarious, penis-shaped castles on Google images, so you'll have to go ahead and use your imagination.

Seriously, though. England. Can't bloody walk for all the castles. Keep tripping over the damn things whenever I go down the lane to get my pony reshod.

Here in Germany, particularly the part where I live in (Rhine valley), we also have a lot of castles. Unfortunately they're all high up on the mountaintops so I never visit any because that's too high for me. :(

I'm personally waiting for the game that features Sonic in suburbia, running through levels filled with housing developments, chain restaurants, and car dealerships.

I just wanna see that damn New York level already. As someone who actually lives in New York, I'd like to see how accurate it looks compared with the real deal.

Couldn't you just play GTA IV or Spider-Man 2 and be satisfied with that? Come on, Sonic doesn't need to be mucking about in real-world locations when there are oceans of oil and speedways of stardust to explore.

Accurate? Fuck that. I wanna see how they've warped it into a Sonic level.

A Sonic or Eggman Statue of Liberty would be nice, but I don't think they'd fit in this real-world level design.
