I decided to count and, of the 50 or 60-something Sonic characters, the only ones never reused are Bark, Bean, Mighty, Ray, Heavy & Bomb, Battle Kukku, Lumina & co, Black Doom, The Babaloyn Rouges, and Tails Doll (and Emerl/Gmerl if you consider them separate characters). You can almost bet that your new lackluster character is a permanent part of the family, compounding any other problems it has.

But Mighty appeared in Chaotix.

That's a factor, but placing appearances aside, the Sonic add-ons are still lacking something substantial.
Howabout the fact you aren't forced to play as any of new Mario characters to complete the game? They are usually NPCs.

So, one out of how many?

I suppose that Luigi (and Waluigi by vague association) would count as well, but yeah, I think that's about it. Even if there are any more, they'd be limited to one game, so it's not really worth mentioning.

Don't forget Boshi from Super Mario RPG.

Hey, speaking of unused Sonic characters, I heard that Fang's original Japanese backstory claimed he came from an alternate reality... any truth to that? I know the US manual makes no mention of such a fact.

Although if it does, you could easily tie him to Blaze (not that I can tell where she really came from anymore; alternate reality or the future...?). Perfect excuse to finally shoehorn him into a game, really.

& Shadow Mario, Bowser Junior's alter ego.

& Bowser Jr. himself as well.

& Goombella as a clone of Goombario.

I actually think that the main reason Mario's new characters work so well is that few of them act in a way that goes against the grain of the general Mario atmosphere--and if they do, they do it in a way that isn't unpleasant.

For example, Wario and Shadow are both pseudo-clones of the main characters with their own spinoffs, but the difference between them is that Wario's games have always stuck to the general Mario spirit (especially in the Wario Land games; in Wario Ware Inc. it started getting weird, but because the WWI series is very self-contained, there's no friction with the casts of the Mario canon and the WWI canon), whereas in Shadow the Hedgehog you have Black Doom and guns and jeeps and alternate endings and IN CHAOS WE ALL FIND OURSELVES, THIS DESTRUCTION IS THE ONLY TALE WE TELL Image

However, Geno did pull off guns pretty well, but then again they were arm guns and shot stars. And he wasn't the main character.

That doesn't make any sense. Did you even play Wario World? That was as much of a departure from the Mario formula as Shadow the Hedgehog was from the Sonic formula.

I had completely forgotten about him until I got to Yoster's Isle in Super Mario RPG again. Besides, he's a yoshi. How else do you make yoshis look different?

Ow. Damnit, now my ears will be ringing for a month, and that was only text.

Everyone else that was mentioned I just forgot about. Except for Koopa Junior, who I want to forget about. Thanks a lot.

Anyway, at least with the recolors in the Mario franchise, their appearances are spaced out few and far between games — usually the Party and sports games — if not limited to one game entirely. With Sonic characters, not so much. The problem isn't that there are so many, but the fact they show up every other game to the point that you're excepting them to show up without rhyme nor reason. If it were limited to one or two appearances, or a few between games (see: Metal Sonic), then people wouldn't be complaining as much.

It would also help more if some of them didn't flat-out suck.

Considering the current Sonic formula is basically just making something that sucks, Shadow adheres pretty closely.

But I think she was talking about the spirit of the games--light-hearted and fun and lacking in any sort of continuity--not the way they play. Wario's been doing his own thing for quite a while. But aside from the first game that spawned him (Mario Land 2?) and sports-type games (where he's just there to fill out the roster), Wario has not had a run-in with Mario ever since, has he? Even in the character-heavy RPG games, the closest is dressing Mario like him in Paper Mario and possibly that Booster character (another character) from Mario RPG. I think the big difference is that Shadow is still kicking around with Sonic even in his own game, and they keep cramming him back into Sonic's games too. Wario's not there screwing up your Mario games, he stays to himself.

Thanks Frieza. Guess he did. Huh, never knew that...

^Thankfully, you only need to use Mario to fully beat the game(unless Nintendo changed requirements I didn't know about).

My original point of usually not being forced to play as "Mario's shitty friends" is still valid.

I suppose this other dimension that Fang lives in could be the location of the Special Stages in S&T2...

At the beginning of Super Mario 64, Yoshi witnesses Mario, Luigi, and Wario enter the castle but never leave. You are then given control of Yoshi, who must save Mario, Luigi, and Wario.

The way I've heard it, you never even play Mario, Luigi, or Wario - you just play as Yoshi who's wearing their respective hats (which makes Yoshi look and play like them).

So, yeah. They're pretty much forcing you to play as Yoshi, even a little bit.

Well, later on you're actually able to rescue Mario, Luigi and Wario, enabling you to switch between any of them at will, no hat required. After that, all you need is Mario to beat the game. Luigi and Wario are just needed to get a few stars.

For that matter, Yoshi is required for a few later stars as well... I think about 2, both of which are in the snow stages (one each), and both involving the melting of large ice blocks via Power Flower.
