I'd rather see a game that plays like the speed portions of Sonic Adventure 2, but with the level design beefed up and tighter controls. However until that comes, I think I'm ok with these lesser takes.

Espio will be playable.
For a moment there, I got Espio confused with Fang and thought that was amazing.

Hopefully the last one will be Fang.... or maybe Mighty?

Yea, just keep thinking that.

This is all for naught if Vector doesn't appear as well (And he won't).

Eh... It'll probably just be Blaze.

Gameplay video

Looks about the same as the first game to me. Nice looking classic style environment but fairly bland and uninteresting looking gameplay.

I would be pretty excited about this game if it weren't about racing.

me too. I think those climbing sequences are hilarious though. I snorted my drink.

Is it just me or is that Tails face on the counter the same face from the Sonic Adventure DX renders?

The game has a single player mode now, remember? I mean, the original did too, but only in a sense, because the 2nd player was controlled by the computer, so it wasn't true single player, even though only one player was actually being controlled by a human, which does not occur in Sonic Rivals 2's single player mode! Do you see what I mean there?

you did that on purpose!

Some lousy screencaps from the gametrailers video that had some interesting stuff.
Image
This sort of level design is interesting because it recalls some of the methods used in the Genesis games to slow the player down for a more exploration oriented segment. Admittedly there probably won't be any such segments in a racing game, but still!
Image
This is silly!
Image
Grinding is less annoying in 2d, but I always wonder what the point is in taking control completely away from the player. I mean, you're not even holding forward.
Image
Hey, spikes! Remember spikes? Were they in Rush? I forget. I remember a bunch of bottomless pits, though. Didn't see any of those in this trailer. Were there any in Rivals 1?
Image
Some form of the jump pads from Sonic Adventure. They seem tighter, but pushing two buttons at the same time in a Sonic game doesn't sit well with me.
Image
A neat set piece that reminds me of the twisting loop from Emerald Hill.
Image
Another twisting loop. What does that meter in the top right of the screen mean? Was it in Rivals 1? I guess I should probably pick the original up.

I love how this is the random 3D game where they decided to revive the old "tails stretched out while spinning" thing way back from 1994.
Locit wrote:Hey, spikes! Remember spikes? Were they in Rush? I forget.
Sure they were. Remember that awful sequence in Altitude Limit 2 which had you controlling a flying saucer and avoiding the emminent spike collision? For that matter Rush introduced, for the first time ever, spikes on grinding rails.

You could just blast through those with the speed boost though.

I must say the game isn't looking too bad. I'd imagine it playing about on par with the likes of Rush. I'm not sure why I completely ignored the first one when it came out.

This version of Rivals will also have a 'free play mode' so you can explore the levels without a rival at your own pace.

I hope it's better than just walking through bland, straight-forward race courses and nothing else.

Yes. That would be like Chaotix all over again.

I found a promo for Rivals 2 with a picture of the game cover at GameStop. I tried to take a picture, but my phone's a bitch. If I'm able to get my hands on a copy of the print later, I might be able to scan it if anyone's really interested.

Anyway, the back of the print states that the game boasts three new characters. The cover shows Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, Metal Sonic, Tails, Espio, and (surprise, surprise) Rouge.

Everyone looks so angry, with the exception of Rouge. Rouge just looks sorta, weird.

Rouge looks repulsed.

That's the most cleavage Rouge has shown in official artwork since her introduction.

And Metal's art looks directly lifted from the SONIC CHANNEL artwork.
