Flash, the overwhelming amount evidence from BOTH parties either indicates that this is an INSANELY elaborate April Fool's prank (which I never knew the Japanese to go for, not to mention that this'd be an insane waste of resources if it WAS a prank), or very much real.
Me? I'm leaning towards the "very much real" side.
*ZOMGEDIT*
I also recall somewhere that development is leaning towards SEGA in the USA/EUR regions and Nintendo in Japan. I'm ASSUMING the the two companies will be sharing resources across the regions to make sure what one region gets isn't RADICALLY different from another, but nobody knows yet.

It can't be an April Fools joke because they are using the official Olympics logo in all the advertising. Using that logo without permission, for any reason, is an invitation to get sued by the most mercilessly rigid legal team in the business.
But see... this game really demonstrates the reason why I'm still skeptical about Sonic showing up in Smash Brothers. Look what has to happen for the two characters to actually team up... equal top billing for Sonic and Mario, and (probably) a 50-50 split of the game's profits between Nintendo and Sega.

Wow. I think this is actually very cool.
Besides, character-wise, I don't see any reason for Sonic and Mario to fight besides them being in two rival gaming companies. It would be like that HORRIBLE Marvel vs DC series from late 90s, where they would pitch Captain America vs Batman for some stupid clashing universe reason.
I really hope this means Sonic on Brawl, because it will be great to whoop Solid Snake's ass with a spindash.

Now, I'm in favor of a Sonic/Mario crossover as much as the next self-respecting man, but this is virtually the worst way to go about it, as far as I'm concerned. Unless it's some sort of abstract take on the Olympic games with Motobug riding and Pokey vaulting, in which case, I still won't bite.
Actually, I'm kind of hoping that this is all just some sort of really expensive farce to spearhead the inevitable announcement that Sonic is making an appearance in SSBB. Makes plenty of sense from a publicity standpoint; it's bound to garner plenty of attention from the gaming audience. Either way it goes, I'm still eager to see where all of this leads.

Here's an interview:

Probably not a big surprise to anyone, but this confirms that it's SEGA that's handling the bulk of the game's development. That doesn't exactly fill me with confidence... at least with Nintendo you know that their somewhat capable of putting together a decent "wacky" sports title.
But then again, Sega and Nintendo's last outright collaboration was F-Zero GX, and it was freaking awesome. So maybe the big N will help bring the best out of Sega again this time.

I really like how Sonic looks in that picture.
This is interesting. It's good to know that they know that.I am a little concerned about Sonic's speed when he's racing Mario in a footrace, so we'll have to see how we can equalize that.

The fact that the 2008 Beijing logo is in the picture is proof enough that its real. A random geek might get away with photoshopping trademarked images he doesn't own but a whole corporation doing that just for a joke?
Besides, here's the report from Nintendo's camp. http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=11783
PS Sonic would probably win at wrestling, since those giant quills would make it hard to pin him. Mario takes fencing despite using a plunger for his weapon.

And how exactly do they plan to "equalize" Sonic and Mario's speed? Just slow Sonic down for no aparent reason and give no reason how or why?
It'd be cool if they had a CG intro movie for this showing all the characters competing with each other and stuff. Maybe show Knuckles and Wario figthing with each other or something.
For those of you worried that Sonic Team is working on this, and wrecking it, apparently according to that interview posted earlier, Sega's sports team is working on it. Not quite sure which AM division that is but it'll probably be Amusement Vision, or maybe Hitmaker.
There aren't any screenshots or videos so I can't really say if I think this is good or not. But I just wish that the first game with Sonic and Mario would've been more....I dunno....like a platform game or a fighting game....

M comes before S in the alphabet. Gotte keep it uniform.cjmcray wrote:My only complaint is Sonic's name should be first.
Well, he IS on a Nintendo console, so I guess Mario goes first.
To those who think it should've been a different kind of game:
At least you won't have to deal with some type of cliched story or anything.
I wonder if it will have any story. Like Eggman teaming up with Bowser and stealing the Olympic Torch or any other nonsense like that.
Among other wonderings:
Stars or Emeralds?
Coins or rings?
Monitors or [?] boxes?
Pipes or posts?
Will Sonic eat a mushroom?
Will Mario get all Emeralds and become Super Mario?
Will Amy and Peach fight to death?
Who will Wario fight? Knuckles, Metal Sonic or Shadow?
Will there be Koopa Troopa Badniks that break and release little trapped Toadies?
Ugh. I just remembered that all the Sonic voices are from Sonic X now. But considering that the Mario characters only make some personal sounds instead of talking, I hope this is what will happen to Sonic and his horrible voiced friends.

In Mario Sunshine, the characters actually had long speaking parts, well, except for Mario, so I wouldn't really rule out talking.Opa-Opa wrote:Ugh. Also, the voices for the Sonic characters aren't that bad (well, except Cream). It's usually a bad line that makes a voice sound bad.
I'd also like to see a story for this. It could inject some light-hearted/comedic goodness that Sonic oh-so-desperately needs lately.
I like how that article shows that Sega is completely aware of their incontinent felching with the last few Sonic games, and how they directly acknowledge Sonic Rush and Secret Rings as being decent titles, which at least shows that they're capable of discerning the difference between a good game and a bad one. Then there's Simon's claim that "Sega has been looking to reinvigorate the Sonic franchise and inject some more quality into the games going forward"- that may very well be as successful as their 'aggressive' attempts at fixing the camera issues in '06, but hey, it's nice to know that they're actually trying now.
This has been a pretty staggering chain of events. Nintendo's supervision may be a good influence on the series, or Sega may just wind up embarrasing themselves in front of the biggest name in the industry. Either way, things are bound to get interesting.

Just have to get this off my chest even though it's become hideously irrelevant mid-page 2.
Whenever anything is announced like, two months either side of April Fool's Day, the entire internets community unites in a singular voice of disbelief. "Hells no!" you cry, "it's like March and shit! That's almost April! Hoax! Hoax!"
It's not fucking April the fucking First. This is a real game and it will probably be a lot of fun to play.
Also, Sonic in Brawl, rejoice, etc.
