Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of Illuminus

Post by Light Speed »

New information regarding the sequel to PSU has just surfaced. This is technically the first real information besides a teaser site I completely missed back in August.
Ambition of Illuminus is confirmed to be a full sequel and not just an expansion pack. Also, the following have been confirmed:

* New weapon types - Photon Whips, Slicers, and Madoogs. Huh?
* New weapons - Including some classics from PSO!
* New SUVs and Photon Arts
* New stages and enemies
* New clothing - PSO styles appear to be new additions.
* Casino - A rappy-themed casino is shown in one of the screenshots.
Is anyone else as shocked as I am about how quickly this is coming out, especially since it is a sequel and not a 'version 2'?

Here's a little more in-depth info I translated but wasn't put in the PSOWorld article.

New Weapon Types
Photon Whip: Vishi is one type that is shown. This weapon is capable of hitting multiple targets in a circumference around your character.
Slicer: A single-handed photon blade that homes in on enemies. Hiken is shown in the scan.
Madoog: Basically a left-handed TECHNIC-casting weapon. It resembles the MAG from PSO. There are four Madoogs shown; Pit, Pegi, Sonichi and Shato.

New Weapons
A number of new weapons will be added in the existing categories. These include Soda Hazzo (long sword), Bran Grenade (grenade launcher), Kouhakanou (rifle), Matohonou (axe), Longbow (bow), Gekitsunata (spear), Koltobazooka (grenade launcher made from the body of a Koltova!), B'duki Magana (handgun), Raikasobera (double saber), Rappy Tippies (twin daggers), Durandal Repca (saber) and Holy Ray (rifle), the last two being throwbacks to two PSO weapons.

New Lobbies
Three new lobbies are shown: a beach city on Parum, a Gurhal shrine on Neudaiz and a casino on Moatoob.

New Fields
Three new fields are shown, too. One is the ruined city of Rozenom, the second is a watery cavern and the third is a throwback to Lupus Silva from PSO, the forest stage.

New Monsters
Nothing too specific is mentioned aside from a Grass Assassin-like enemy and then a boss (possibly) that looks similar to Barba Ray.

New Room Goods
Not much to it; just new decorations and remodeling tickets.

New Photon Arts
Two new PAs are mentioned. One is the Cross Hurricane, a twin saber PA, the other is Chueijitotsushin, a twin claw PA.

New SUV Weapons
Gigas Espada and Paradi Cataract are two new SUVs shown.

New Clothes
Looking over the article, you'll probably notice lots of new clothes, some of them styled just like clothing from PSO, for example the orange and yellow outfit that Ash the HUmar wore. Also, it looks like there are some new hairstyles being added to the game, too!

Sounds like an expansion pack's worth of content.

You calling Sega a liar? I'm hoping this game is good enough to actually suck everyone into like PSO did, but since it just seems like more weapons armor, areas and clothing I somehow doubt it will.

Does anyone here even still play PSU? I lasted until about mid January, but I didn't play at all the prior 3 weeks due to being out of the country.

these PSO segments have got me so giddy. Namely the Humar fighting the rappies in what looks like Forest 1. Now what we truely desire is about to come true: PSO with updated graphics. We never even wanted this PSU schlock.

I bet there will be a crappy new one-player mode to justify releasing an expansion as a sequel.

PS2, PC and 360.

Something that wasn't covered in the news post... There will be a network-wide trial of Ambition this spring. From what the magazine article says, it will be open to (JP) PC and PS2 users. They'll be given the option to either carry over their current character or create a new one for the trial. If the player chooses to carry over their current character, their data will be copied over to a second server made just for the trial. (Of course, their data will remain on the main servers for the current game.) Once the trial is over, all character data from it will be wiped, therefore, nothing from the trial period will carry over to the current game.

This picture has made my day, and I know it has made yours too!

Sega has launched a new website for Phantasy Star Universe: Ambitions of Illuminus, it includes some new pictures.
At the moment, the site contains some information about a network trial that is going to be held in Japan, although there is no information yet on how to sign up for it. In addition, there are eight screenshots of the game which showcase some of the new features and items that will come along with it.
Come check it out!

It made yours, sure, but I'm completely and totally apathetic, since I don't play <i>PSO</i> games. Nice try.

To me it looks like a PSO screen shot with more vibrant colors and a more detailed character model. The ground and trees still look like ass though. I wouldn't really call it a day maker unless this game is actually fun to play.

Well..if youre an online player, you do realize that it is the only way you can play something that comes close to PSO now that the old servers are down. Me? my only hope is that it contains the same forest BGM and most of the enemies, so far so good since Rappies have been comfirmed as well as Grass assassins! It is a nice gift to those who missed on PSO stuff, dont you think? Can't wait for some of my friends to join in on this one.

My hope is that the white/purple version of the HUmar outfit is intact in the game's code. I have full intentions of reliving my PSO days, oh yes.

I am an online player and I tried playing PSU online for a couple months, I just couldn't get sucked in like PSO did. I'm willing to give this new one another try, but probably not for 60 bucks.

Hmm, I see, So what exactly didn't you like about PSU? If you dont mind. Was it the music, gameplay, worlds, enemies? so far Ive heard mixed reactions about this game, I only just want to find out why all the buzz and unbuzz in some areas of this game.

For me PSO and PSU are different games, I enjoyed PSO and now I enjoy PSU, the problem of the PSO lovers who criticise PSU is that they COMPARE both games and that is an error, both games have their pros and cons, a PSO clone wouldn’t have been better than the actual game.

I have been online since the xbox version landed Europe, and I still play almost every day.

I honestly can't really put my finger on it. It feels a lot like PSO, but when I play I feel like I'm doing work. I logged like 80 hours too, so I definitely tried to enjoy it, but in the end it just seemed like a pain to get anything done. I didn't really like how all the weapons nowadays have to be made, and none are even that great (at least in comparison to rares of PSO). Rares didn't even seem to exist, even the rare patterns that dropped were just higher star versions of other weapons and weren't actually rare. Also leveling up your partner machine was ridiculous without insane amounts of money, but I hear its pretty easy to make insane amounts of money with a high level partner machine.

Another annoying thing is how they really didn't add a whole lot of additional market content, meaning stores and stuff, but they stretched it out over four planets so you have to run all over the damn place to get anything. That gripe is just a minor annoyance though.

If I had to pin it on any one thing I think it was just that forces aren't fun to play anymore. That is the main race I played in PSO (even though I actually had almost every race over 130 at one point or another), but in this game simply hitting an enemy with your spells became a chore. If you use a two hander you can store four spells, which is shit, and you cast so slow that chances are the monster moved. If you use the faster alternative you only have two spells, but you have a offhand gun then you end up using all the time so you can hit every monster before it dies, which in turn means your spells don't level fast at all. In PSO you could map 6 spells and you could pop up a list of all your spells, so you could put two on top of the list and two on bottom. Once you got good you had 10 spells at least that were easily accessible. One could argue you can easily switch weapons in PSU and have different spells mapped to each, but since weapons are such a pain to get, that is also a pain.

Anyway, I didn't really dislike the game as much as that rant probably sounds, but that's a quick rundown of what I found frustrating.

As I said, you are comparing PSU with PSO, I prefer a new game better than a PSO ver.3.7

About what you mentioned, PSO had a lot more rares, good point, but almost 90% of the weapons in PSO are junk, bad point, in PSO meseta was only valuable for MAG farming and fluids, bad point, in PSU meseta is all (at least in xbox 360), forces in PSU are more powerful, good point, they are hard to play, bad point?, rangers can aim and sidestep, good point, the automatic aim in long distances may be worst, bad point… and a large etcetera

I'm not a hardcore gamer, in three months I'm only lvl 50 and advanced job lvl 4, my weapons palette is full of B ranks and I'm as poor as a rat, but I enjoy playing this game because I have some friends to play with, Spanish community in PSU is very short so we know each other very well and have a good time just playing together

PSU's level design is lackluster compared to PSO's. This is the main reason I'm not having as much fun. We went from already drab level designs to interesting ones (episode 2 and 4) and now we're back to drab but without the charm of PSO.

Slowdown also is horrendous.

In order to reach a bigger user base, PSU was released on a system weaker than the one PSO was finally on(episode 1 and 2 were visually amazing). It's true you can get a slightly better experience on 360 and PC but there is no escaping that this is a dated feeling ps2 game.

I see, thanks for your view on PSU guys...I now understand the difference between the two alot better now.

Hmm! new images! I gotta say, this level has me interested.

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/doc ... /psu12.htm

Its like a mixture of the spaceship, temple and forest 2 level! I do hope this sequels captures all of the missing charm the PSO had...so far so good ne? The water cave level, wonder how will that one work.

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/doc ... /psu21.htm

Just hope the "Gorrilla" and the "Wolf" are in there somewhere! wonder how many PSO outfits they trew in.
