Sonic 2 prototype found

Post by Spazz »

Recently, drx obtained a cart of an early alpha of Sonic 2.

What's known so far:
- Possibly the same or close to the Nick Arcade version.
- UDDDDU A+Start is level select.
- Pressing B on any stage in level select enables 2P mode.
- Contained stages are GHZ, CPZ, HPZ, LZ(?), EHZ, HTZ, and Special Stage, which freezes.
- Zones contain Sonic 1 music.
- Sonic's Bonus Plate graphic is different.
- Different zone layouts.
- Sonic falls back after hitting a wall.
- <a href="http://forums.hidden-palace.org/viewtop ... enshots

More on this as it develops.

Edit:
CCCCUDDDDU enables debug. Just be sure to hold A when entering a level.

Am I the only one here who hasn't played Hidden Palace before? Because this seems like some pretty exciting stuff.

Wow, this is pretty awesome. I wonder how he got ahold of the cart in the first place.

Yes, you probably are.

That doesn't make this particular beta any less awesome, however.

It's neat, but it's a shame it doesn't have more in it that's actually never-before-seen.

I mean, if it wasn't for the bizarre running-into-walls physics, the only differences from previously discovered versions would have been a couple of minor sprite recolours and object placement changes.

Still a really cool find, though! I don't mean to sound so grumpy, I'm sure he went through a ton of trouble to get it and it's pretty bad ass that he did. I guess the old beta, with its massive quantity of never-before-seen level art and sprite animation, kinda spoiled me. :)

You can read about it here

Drx also came across someone who is selling Tails Adventures and Sonic Labyrinth prototypes.

Yeah, I was a little underwhelmed too. I guess people are really pumped to be able to find any new stuff in Sonic 2 after we already got a beta.

Over at the Mobius Forums, GyserHog wrote up a lovely little post for people who couldn't/won't download the ROM.

Basically, it listed some of the things he found while exploring, with pictures for most of it. A lot of it has been listed here, but it might be worth checking out.
