Sonic the Hedgehog Shorts

STH technical details

IT Media's coverage of the Tokyo Game Show revealed a selection of technical details about Sonic the hedgehog.

The game is currently 80% complete. Both versions of the game are identical in terms of graphics, but the PS3 edition has longer loading times. Sega, however, hope to rectify this before release.

The PS3 version will be released in Japan on the 21st of December, which is nearly a month after the western versions. Sega Japan has yet to provide a date for the 360 version, but according to IT Media, it will also be released on the same day.

STH pre-order gifts

As with all Sonic games, the Sonic the Hedgehog will be accompanied with a selection of pre-order gifts, which will be exclusively released through the Japanese website Sega Direct.

The quality of pre-order gifts has been slowly decreasing over the years and this latest collection does nothing to reverse this trend. The gifts have no connection to Sonic and instead use artwork from a generic Sega Direct branding campaign. The 360 gift consists of a mug and a mystery candle, while the 360 version is a pencil case.

Sega Direct will also be releasing the game with a limited edition QUO phone card that is emblazoned with the game box art. This edition will be 500 yen more than the standard version.

Incidentally, the page announcing the gifts contained a new screen of the Town Stage:

Nice new screenshot. Can anyone translate what it says on the bottom? But about that mug, why would they put a baby on it?

I was expecting some sort of promotion involving pants. Now I'm disappointed.

It's a constant struggle between 'EXCITEMENT' and 'HOLY SHIT I HATE THIS DEMO SO MUCH THAT I WANT TO SHIT ON MY X-BOX 360'.

As soon as I read that "80%" bit, I feared what horrible complaining you guys would have in store for me when I clicked comments. Good that I got this in beforehand.

Let's all keep in mind (not that I expect you to listen): "80%" applies to the TGS demo in the state it was when it was deemed ready for TGS, assuming I read that right. And only a few people in existance know exactly what that number relates to: Sonic Team, and god. I stopped trying to guess at what "40%" meant at E3 long ago, and am happier for it. Take a hint.

Onto other things, note that odd red gauge in the screenshot. I can't quite make out what the thing next to it is...some orb? And can we say safely the candle is meant for those who wish to destroy their manhood with the power of scent?

I think that gauge is the amount of rings you've collected throughout the course of the game, so you can use them to buy moves in the town. It's probably red because he has 000000000 rings. At least that's what it looks like to me.

I forgot how many bonus rings you're supposed to be awarded for getting an S Rank, but yeah, it's a lot and those magic cartoon character pockets are are deeper than ever.

On the other hand, the score counters in SA2/Heroes/Shadow were a lot bigger than anybody would ever need (into the 10 millions digits)...

God so very much cares about the new Sonic game, that he's keeping himself up to date on it.

I thought this had to do with Sonic pants, so I ignored it for the past 3 days or so.

Oh well, not a big loss. Interesting new screen, though.

Is this a good time to go hide under a Metool helmet in fear for the Ibliss Trigger being unleashed?

That's left up to the reader's interpretation.
