Temporary purchasable abilities might work... still a stupid idea, but...
I think better suited to the rings mechanic would be having special abilities that require a certain number of rings, but don't cost anything. Not that I much like that either.

it might be cool if sonic had certain attacks that use up rings. like a super attack that destroys everything on screen for the cost of 100 rings. but then again it seems unnessesary because all the enemies die in one hit, I think.

The ultimate upgrade, the S Monitor. Sonic pulls it out of his ass in a tough situation and cracks it open and thus Super Sonic is born.

OCB: Who's composing the music this time around? Is it still Jun Senoue, or some new guy? The music sounds like it's done by someone else or something; the quality is far superior to that of Jun's past works, if it does happen to be him.

Oh, it also reminds me of the world Tales of Legendia takes place--Melfes.

I think we should call him "Meffles" or "Meffley."

It's a pretty decent name, yes, but it really makes you wonder just what happened when they came up with 'Silver'.
Oh, and I kind of thought it was pronounced meh-files.

When I read the name "Mephiles", three things come to my mind:
-Greek.
-Fairly original if compared to names of recent Sonic characters.
-STD.

Damn, I was about to post about Mephistopheles earlier but decided not to.
So I assume Eggman basically makes a deal with Iblis or Mephiles an gets fucked over in the end?

Mephiles actually looks like a butchered version of Mephistopheles (Not just storywise, but phonetically and visually as well).

IGN have posted some brief impressions of the build playable at the Leipzig Games Convention.
It seems the demo hasn't changed that much since E3, with the dodgy controls and unavoidable dangers still having a detrimental effect on the experience.

The controls are still a little stiff
Huh? I thought the complaints were about the controls being too slippery? Other than that, this sounds like the exact same build from E3.

I did some research into the name a while back, and uncovered this article on Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mephistopheles
Make what you will, but there are vague similars in the stories between this and Sonic.
*strokes chin pensively*
Hmmmmmm...
So Mephistopheles was one of the devil's chief demons, and Iblis is the arabic word for devil, and the story of Sonic and Mephistopheles are vaguely similar...
Are we to assume that Eggman makes a faustian deal with Iblis, and Mephiles (as Iblis' chief minion) comes to collect on Eggman's soul?
Meanwhile, Xboxyde has new gameplay videos.

Gamestop's got a slick promotion going. Buy the game (preorder doesn't appear to be necessary) and they give you a Sonic plush. The quills are questionable, but it could be a bad pose. Nevertheless, I know I want it, as i've been trying to track down a plush of the post-SA1 Sonic for a while, and this one's free. Also,
possible boxart.

Ew. That the same fugly looking Sonic plush they usually give away at carnival games or found stashed in a corner of some hobby shop.
The last decent Sonic plush were those Sonic X UFO catchers.
