True, but at the very least, the Egg Pawns actually suited the game's atmosphere, and in a way, the game itself. (Half-assed and uninspired, har)

My guess is that it has something to do with all that jazz about reinventing the series and whatnot.

But, you know... It's just a hunch. :[

Every fucking new Sonic game that has come out since 2001 has supposedly been to REINVENT THE SONIC SERIES!!!! which - as I'm sure I don't have to tell you - has not actually happened since Sonic Adventure, unless "reinvention" is synonymous with "ruining it to shit with gimmicks".

Ladies (redundant) and gentlemen, that's why I'm not excited by four screenshots of a tech demo, as pretty as it may be.

The brilliance of it is that, not only has he decided on a preference at this early stage in the coming generation's life cycle, he's even decided he likes the one we know nothing about best.

I personally enjoyed the nonthreatening badniks more than the crappy, generic robots introduced in SA 2. I remember specifically thinking "Fuck yeah!" when I first saw the blue-green rhino badniks in Emerald Coast.

No. These 'new' screens are actually just captures from the tech-demo.
True, but games companies never officially release tech demo footage unless it's indicative of the final product. And in my experience, the end product of a game ALWAYS looks better than the first tech demo.
Really? Heroes and the Advance games were more back to basics than re-inventions (try playing a Sonic game made before 1995, they all play like them). And other recent titles like Shadow or Sonic Battle are more like spin-offs (to call them re-inventions would be like calling Sonic Drift or Chaotix re-inventions). If anything, the two Adventure games were "ruining it to shit with gimmicks" (Fishing levels? An RPG element? Treasure hunting? WTF?).
My impressions; I think SONICTEAM should dump the futuristic Gundam-esque robots in favor of the classic badniks such as buzzbomber, motobug, or crabmeat, with a resemblance to the robot designs from the likes of Invader Zim (Small pupils, disfigured eyes, something to give off that Nightmare Before Christmas vibe). The environments don't look very Sonic-y either.
Therein lies the "re-invention". When Naka talks about the re-invention of the franchise, a lot of it is self-evident in the tech demo. The comedy beetles and robo-monkeys throwing coconuts have been replaced with proper, genuinely threatening anime robots (like the ones in SA2, only not shit). The linear sonic heroes-esque paths made of rocks with grid patterns on them have been replaced with wide open spaces and a more realistic art-style. There are no other characters other than Sonic. And the whole thing has a focus on speed (that motion blur shot looks so blatantly "Burnout 3" to me).

I prefer the googly-eyed animal badniks, but I can see how they clash with the Uekawa era.

What about the Gamecube tech demo with a realistic Link fighting a realistic Ganondorf? Nonetheless, I doubt they'd release these screenshots with the official game announcement unless they mean something. The game we see next week may very well look just like this; but don't just assume it will, 'cause it might not.

Sonic Advance and definitely Sonic Heroes don't play anything like the Mega Drive Sonics. :( But anyway, what he meant was that with both SA2 and Sonic Heroes, Sonic Team said they wanted to go back to the series' roots (although they failed with both attempts if you ask most people); even though they're calling this new game a 'reinvention', they've also said they've been going back to the original games in some press release somewhere.

I don't particularly care for the Gundam ripoffs either. They just don't seem to match Eggman's style, although they were fine for GUN.

But hey, if they make Flickies pop out of them, I'm all for it.

Oh yeah, I want my fucking Chao back. Or at least a game featuring Chao.

THE MOST HORRIBLE NEWS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last thing to mention this month is all for the
Sonic the Hedgehog fans out there. A lot of you
have been emailing in and asking about whether or
not I’ll be doing Sonic’s voice for the new
“Shadow the Hedgehogâ€￾ game, etc. Well, here’s a
news flash on that and a true insight to how this
business works (and sometimes works against you).

After hearing some rumors on the internet and so
forth about how the game had already started
voicework (or in some cases was already done), I
emailed my contacts at Sega to find out what the
deal was. I got the following facts:
Many of you remember what happened with the
whole “Sonic Xâ€￾ television show. Please read all
about it in the July 2003 newsletter. In short,
4Kids was really inconsiderate and cast it
without me, not caring about what the fans
thought or about product continuity. Well, all of
a sudden, Sega decided that product continuity
WAS important to them starting with this new
Shadow game. So, WITHOUT TELLING ME, they have
*replaced* me as the voice of Sonic with the
fella who does Sonic’s voice for the Sonic X
show. I was only told after it happened. My Sega
contact told me that they thought it would be a
good idea that from now on that Sonic’s voice
remain the same in the game and the non-Sega
cartoon series. So after FIVE YEARS of providing
the voice of Sonic, I was let go without a word
or an explanation (until I went looking for one).

Now I have no ill-will towards the new voice.
I’ve heard him. He does a fine job. And he’s just
an actor like me trying to make a living, so good
for him! I DO, however, have issue with Sega for
having no grace in letting me go from my
position. That’s life, you could say, but you
know, in MY life, you treat people with respect.
And I believe five years of giving my all to the
little blue hedgehog (and to all the fans!)
deserved a little more respect. So Sega, goodbye
and good luck. Sounds like you’ll get along fine
with 4Kids when you do business that way.
*************************************************

So that's the story. Spread the word. Sorry it
doesn't have a happier ending. In my opinion,
Sega does not care what the fans think, because
they figure the fans will buy the games and the
products no matter who's doing the voice. If you
feel so inclined. Write them and tell them what
you think and feel. Let your voice be heard!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your wonderful support.
You have my deepest gratitude.

~Ryan Drummond

SEGA of AMERICA Fired Ryan (SONIC's VOICE) and ALL of the other Voice actors in favor of the 4KIDS Voice actors!

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!!!???

LETS ALL WRITE SEGA ABOUT THIS!!! QUICK!!!!!!!!!COMEON!! HELP ME!!

DAMN IT!! WE HATE 4KIDS SEGA!!!!!!!

THE WONT GET AWAY WITH IT!![/quote]

I don't know. I thought Ryan had really settled into the character well by Sonic Heroes. The dialogue was terrible, of course, but his delivery was finally sounding natural. The same goes for Knuckles' voice actor, and Rouge as well. From what I've seen of the US Sonic X, the 4Kids actors are going to be a big step down for those three, at the very least.

But have they really replaced all the actors? In the Shadow trailers, Shadow still sounds the same to me as he always has...

I would've went a step further and removed voice acting from Sonic games all together.
