Well... I don't think it would be difficult to top.

Hey, that doesn't look so bad after all. The third picture does make me a little iffy. I do find it strange that these characters wear cloths and not Sonic, Tails or Knuckles... Unless, they do wear cloths in this game too. Still, for an early picture, the game looks nice. I look forward to its showing at TGS.

I had that guy as my avatar for a while. I think he's really called Badoru Kukku, as it said in the Tails Adventures manual. I think there was also an owl character in the game, who was one of the bosses. He was suppose to be a mad scientist or something?

Anyway, I think the final product of the game will look a lot better. Remember, Shadow the Hedgehog looked like a N64 game at first in the Walk of Game trailer back in March. But looking at the August trailer now, they touched up the graphics quite a bit in the past few months. Same goes to Sonic Rush.

While Sonic has always had an 'extreme streak', most of his previous extreme stints were either (relatively) new to video games or produced with a distinctive Sonic style. The problem with Riders, much as with Shadow the Hedgehog, is that rather then setting some new extreme trends, Sonic Team is merely following existing ones.

Previous Sonic games were also much better at integrating the extreme elements so they would enhance, and not dominate, the Sonic experience. The boarding sections of Sonic 3 and the Adventure games, for example, only occurred at the start and end of their respective levels. They were also not available to the whole Sonic cast, which made the sports a distinctive aspect of Sonic’s character. Sonic Riders would be more unique (in comparison to existing boarding games) if it did something similar (for example, making it possible for Sonic to jump off the board and find shortcuts by racing on foot or having some characters not use a board but their special abilities).

Riders may end up being a very enjoyable game, but it will always feel like 'just another one of the crowd' as opposed to being an original trend setter.

ウェーブ = Ueebu ( Web, which I'll assume ign mistranslated) = Wave.

C'mon, Web the Swallow? It's gotta be Wave. o_o

Yeah, but Web the Swallow was just BAFFLING. It's like calling a character Barky the Cat. Or Shellback the Slug. Or Arms the Snake.

Hey, this is fun!

Oh. For some reason I originally read that as "Web the Spider", which would've made more sense. Also, according to The Magicbox, the game is already 70% done, which makes me wonder why Sonic Team didn't make an announcement earlier.

I think they're counting on Shadow to be their big holiday seller, and probably didn't want to steal thunder from the hype campaign. It's unlikely Riders will be out this year.

There was that "Sonic R Extreme" debacle from a while ago, so it would seem that they originally wanted to announce this game earlier. (Also note the emphasis on the "R" in Sonic Racers' logo.)

Man, I can't believe there wound up being some truth to that rumour. Crazy!

I think Gibs is probably right about this not getting released until early next year. Although, I was just thinking about something... what rating do you suppose the ESRB will be giving Shadow? As much as it pains me to use the word "mature" to describe a concept that only a six-year-old would think is cool... can Shadow's game really score less than a Teen rating when the main character is brandishing a handgun on the game's cover?

Maybe Sega thinks they need a second holiday hog title for the under 12 set, and maybe Sonic Riders is it. Considering how much trouble they went to to keep Gems Collection rated E... I'd think the tots are an age demographic they want the franchise to keep covering.

I think since Shadow technically only shoots evil alien monsters and possibly robots, it's covered under "cartoon violence", which is probably still an E.

Anyway, from my experience in retail, a T rating does not concern the grand majority of parents, even of young children. Especially not at Christmas, when their sole, wild concern is to make sure little Billy gets "Blood Rage III - The Undead Warriors" like he wanted.

Believe me, I know it. I was at EB the other day, and watched a lady sit through five minutes of vocal warnings from the cashier as she purchased a copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for her 12 year old kid. (Who was there with her at the counter.) I swear, the conversation went almost exactly like this:

"So, you do realize that in this game, you can become a pimp, have sex with prostitutes to get health, and then kill them afterwards to get your money back?"

"It's Ok. My Johnny has been waiting for this one for a long time!"

But even if they don't really need to be, I think Sega is concerned about the ratings. Otherwise I don't think they would have bothered dodging the Teen score for Gems Collection by removing the SoR games.

That's why I find the Shadow game so baffling. You can get away with so much if you use lasers, or bazookas, or any other kind of over-the-top firearms... but realistic handguns have always been the traditional no-no because their use is emulatable. "Don't touch Daddy's gun in the bedside table, kids!" It's one of our favourite longstanding children's media messages. I would be very surprised to see Shadow get an E rating, especially when all the official artwork borders on furry porn for the gun-fetish set. (Or is that gun fetish porn for the furry set?)

Announcing a game when in 70% done? At least something that makes sense…

They want to carry the "eXtreme" theme to the characters' appendages. =P

There is no way that the ESRB is going to give an "E" rating to a game that features the main character using realistic guns--no matter what their target. I'm guessing that it will get an "E10" at the least and if is true that you can shoot the GUN human soldiers, I expect the rating to be bumped to "T" at the most.

The scans won't load for me. Does Sonic look like he did in Heroes?

I despise that look. He looked so much better in SA2. Same applies to Tails and Knuckles, that shiny shit pisses me off.
