Bean paste is really made of beans. There's red bean paste (made of red beans) and green bean paste (made of dogs). They both taste about the same, and they're sweetened a lot. They're used frequently in Asian pastries, and there's even sweet "soups" made of them. It's quite nice, and my grandmother makes some kickass red bean soup.

Of course, we don't call it by such primitive English translations. The red bean paste is called "hong-do" and the red bean soup is "hong-do tang".

Red beans... as in the same kind of beans in "red beans and rice"? Because that's nasty.

And dogs as in... as in dogs? Because, because... dude!

Kidney beans are used in rice, generally. Unless, of course, they're one and the same.

The beans used in red beans and rice are kidney beans.

The Asian red beans are Azuki beans.

EDIT: Oh, and the dogs comment was a joke.

The green bean paste, incidentally, is made of Mung beans, not dogs.

Well shit man, I mean, we don't know. Don't they eat rats in, like, Thailand or something? Freaking Asians will eat whatever crawls under their noses, that's why their skin is yellow and they all have bad teeth.

Well, I'm happy to be the local authority on Asians, so long as I can dispel silly misconceptions about us. :P

I had Red Bean Ice Cream once at a Japanese resturant. It actually had solid red beans in it and... I liked it.

I got rat flavor ice cream from a Thai restaurant once. It was okay except for the tufts of fur.

I can't really say we serve rat but for some reason thai, japanese and chinese food goes down incredibly well although most of the punters are caucasian.
