Really? In the first megadrive game you fought pigs, in the second one lizards and in the snes game you fought wolfs. I would say the snes version pretty much followed the formula for a new entry in the series. But I guess it doesn't really matter in the end, I love them equally.

I wonder what sort of animal-army Sparkster should fight in a fourth game.

Alright, I have just beaten RKA2 ("Sparkster"). The battle with King Gedol was pretty difficult since I didn't obtain the Legendary Armor. How does it fare with its predecessor? I say RKA2 is a more truer Sparkster game than the original, gameplay and story-wise. I wouldn't be lying if I said the first RKA was more addicting, but the story was way too simular to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and it didn't take much advantage of Sparkster rocket-pack. I'm going to give Konami a pat on the back and try the Super Famicom Sparkster.

How could anything be more true to a series than the original game?

Just asking.

I know that it sounds weird how I said that, but I meant the game felt more Sparkster-ish than the original. It's like Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic CD. Sonic the Hedgehog may be the original, but Sonic CD felt more Sonic-y. I guess what I meant to say was the atmosphere in RKA2 felt more complete and redeeming for Sparkster than the original. Confusing, yes, but it's only my opinion.

Maybe it's just me, but I in no way, shape, or form, considered time travel to be more Sonic-y.

No, "Sonic The Hedgehog" is the most Sonic-y, Sonic CD was a step in the right direction. "Sparkster" was also a step in the right direction by allowing sustained flight and better controls.

My terminology might be a tad off. For an antidote, I'll take back what I said about RKA2 being more truer than the original. I'll still believe the atmosphere in RKA2 truely defines Sparkster, but the original is most true of the Sparkster saga. As for Sonic CD, I believe, as a fan, that the game is Sonic's most accurate calling. That's the reason I included it as an example.

In terms of distinctive atmosphere, the original destroys the sequels. Everything was somewhat medival and the robots and various metal contraptions were all old and rusty looking, it had a sort of european look about it (someone give me an art word here). After that, they generic-ified it and gave it a slicker (but not necessarily more polished) look and sound, blending it in better with existing platformers. RKA established an atmosphere that had never been done before and hasn't really been done since (certainly not in the same way).

In terms of story--you cannot give Sonic 2 credit for its story formula. Aside from the whole Death Star thing, it was pretty much a cliche formula even then. If you don't go into space, you go someplace similar, and RKA handled the entire thing in a completely different manner from Sonic 2 anyway.

I believe the word you're looking for is "baroque".

There's not much that's baroque about Rocket Knight.

You're right, baroque is too modern looking back at it. (I shall push a rocket up my arse for that) I wonder what the word is then? Romantic maybe?

I don't think it fits comfortably into any classic or traditional style... But then, I never got anything higher than a B in an art history class, so I don't suppose I'm qualified to make that judgment.

Probably an analgm of styles then. Whatever the case, the style was one of the most endearing features.

... So I was playing Sparkster on an SNES emulator, and it appears good ol' Dr. Eggman does have a half cousin.

You know, I was going to say that, and then I thought, no, that's fucking lame.

Hey, here's a joke I wrote the other day about http://www.pitchforkmedia.com .

What do you call an album that gets a 9.5 at Pitchfork?

A terrible Radiohead album!

HAHAHAH
