Top 5 Desert Island Games

Post by Grant »

Okay. You're stranded on a desert island for whatever reason and there are no gorgeous foreign women with coconuts on their boobs around. Also, mermaids seem to not exist when you need them to.

Luckily, you remembered to bring along five video games and their respective systems and controllers and a magical outlet to plug it into!

The question is, what are your five?

Keep in mind: you are going to be stranded on this island forever and you will be alone the entire time. Do you want to keep playing Shenmue the whole time? Is Chu Chu Rocket never going to get stale? So think about it a bit.

My Five:
1. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
2. NHL '95
3. Virtua Tennis
4. Super Mario Bros. 3
5. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

1. Sonic Mega Collection
2. F-Zero X
3. Puzzle Bobble
4. Super Mario All Stars w/ Super Mario World
5. Namco Museum (for Mrs. Pacman, Duh!)

Do MMOs count?
Just an idea for others: Dead or Alive XBV might be appropriate...

1. Sonic Jam: All the Sonic games, ported correctly
2. Silent Hill 2: Not only will I FINALLY have time to get all the endings, I'll also have time to kill Maria over and over and over again!
3. FFVII: I'll make a point of getting the Barret date EVERY SINGLE TIME.
4. Devil May Cry: Don't make fun of my obsession with pixelated hotness, I'll cry.
5. Duck Hunt: IT NEVER GETS OLD

This is by no means an indication of what are necessarily my favourite games, but it's definitely the ones I could play for the longest without going quite, quite mad:

- Metroid Prime
- F-Zero GX
- Animal Crossing
- Gitaroo Man
- NiGHTS

Do we have an internet connection too? If so, I'd have to replace some of those with Worms Armageddon, PSO and Team Fortress Classic.

Hmmmmmm... How about:

Marathon Infinity: The best FPS ever made, with built in editor... Like halo, only it'll run on my computer.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2: Somethingorother else with an editor. I'm not fussed. Plus it has spike pits, and they never get old.
Worms: I never get bored of that wonderful hissing sound of mushy enemy on molten lava...
Rocket Knight Adventures: Nothing is quite as amusing as controlling an armoured possum with a rocket on his back.
Escape Velocity Nova: I'll call you back when I've dominated the galaxy in a terrapin.

1.) Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World (though I really would just play SMB3 most of the time)
2.) NiGHTS into Dreams
3.) Virtua Tennis
4.) Animal Crossing
5.) Sonic Jam or Sonic Mega Collection

Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball -- Helena will wear the Ushas. Oh yes, she will. I'll have the rest of my life to make her.

Sonic Mega Collection -- If I get the Japanese version, it'll be fun to see how long I can play The Ooze before throwing up.

Animal Crossing -- I'll finally find out if the game really does have an ending after 30 years like the rumor says.

Virtua Fighter 4 -- I'll finally have time to master every single character and nobody to witness my accomplishment.

Shenmue 2 -- I will yet explore every single room in every single building of Kowloon.

If I happen to have internet access on that island, the list may be a little different. With all of eternity sprawled out before me, I would happily sit down to master every nuance of FFXI. I might also consider adding Dark Cloud 2 to the list. By the time I do everything there is to do in that game, I'd be too old to see the screen anymore.

You know, I rented that, expecting at least a decent game. Clearly, nobody plays it for the actual gameplay.

You know, when making the list I didn't even consider collections like Sonic Jam or Mario All-Stars.

The modified list then becomes..

NHL 95
Virtua Tennis
Sonic Mega Collection
Mario All-Stars
Ocarina of Time

- Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World - Super NES
I could play Super Mario Bros. 3 forever. It never, ever, ever, ever gets old. I would also have the time to solve the extremely hard Lost Levels (my worst enemy when it comes to gaming), take a trip back in time to my first console experience with Super Mario Bros., and spend some time in my magical vegetable garden with Super Mario Bros. 2 and take on some Shy Guys, and ride into the sunset with Yoshi in Super Mario World.

- The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition - GameCube
It's got four wonderful Zelda games on one disc. No explanation needed.

- Sonic Mega Collection - GameCube
It's got the classic trilogy which I love, but the reason I choose this over Sonic Jam is the extra games Jam doesn't have. I'd take more games over pretty extras any day, I suppose.

- Tetris & Dr. Mario - Super NES
I've been addicted to this two-pack for years. The two best puzzle games ever. Endless amount of replay value right there.

- Grand Theft Auto: Double Pack - Xbox
Yeah, I know it's two games, but the Double Pack is one fine little loophole. I would have the Xbox version, and just cruise around all day running people over and rocking out to Faith No More's "Epic" and Green Jello's "Three Little Pigs".

So I used compilations for all of my choices, sue me.

Honorable mentions for infinetly replayable games shall go to Midway Arcade Treasures, SSX Tricky, Metal Gear Solid, Sonic Adventure, Activision Anthology, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Gran Turismo 3, Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures, Ice Hockey (NES), Techmo Bowl (NES), Animal Crossing, and Final Fantasy Origins.

1. Super Metroid
2. Command and Conquer: Red Alert
3. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
4. Mario All Stars
5. Sonic Mega Collection

Super Metroid is the greatest game ever made and Red Alert never gets old. Majora's Mask is awesome, Mario Alls Stars is ok. It's only on there because it's multiple games in one, I don't like the updated graphics. Is Sonic CD on the mega collection?

cripes, when i saw the title of this thread, i was expecting you wanted us to name 5 interesting games about or taking place on deserted islands
here it is folks: sonic team's next game, you heard it here first

dun dun da dunnnnnnnnNNNNNnNnnnnnnNNNnnNnn

DESERTED ISLAND CASTAWAY REALTIME SIM!!!!!!

yujikins (dark lord nakakun) : 'i think with this game, people will... people will... people will delight in the supreme joy of being by ones' self. i would compare it to sonic in regards of it being about the expression of living; of the celebration of life'

1. Super Mario Land - In Bowser's Castle, I will have the time to familiarize myself with EVERY different numbered section...

2. Jumping Flash!- I'd smoke the coconuts on the island and amuse myself by jumping off of high digitalized things while playing as a mecha bunny with laser cannons attatched to his ears.

3. FFVII - Finally enough time to give a flick about raising a supreme chocobo to get that damn KOTR materia.

4. Klonoa - I'd touch myself. but cry while doing it. and enjoy it.

5. A pirated super cartridge and a Game Boy Advanced to take with me while lounging and floating around on that crappy little raft i made.
It should include like 25 all time classics like Tetris, Link To The Past, Megaman, Puzzle Bobble, some Pokémon version, Puzzle Bobble, Dr. Mario, Frogger, etc.

Oh, and I'd cheat. I'd also bring Project: Horned Owl, Sonic Jam, House Of The Dead, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Suikoden, and the ever elusive Boogerman for the Genesis.

Radiant Silvergun - RS is one of the few shooters that I think is fun to play both for score and just to blow stuff up recklessly, which are, in RS' case, two completely unrelated things. It's also hard and I may never master it. Ikaruga is in a similar boat but isn't so much fun when not playing for score. I also find it satisfies a certain spiritual aspect..

Sonic CD - Unless a collection comes along that includes it, though I think picking collection-type games is kinda cheating, much as I'd like to take Ristar along as well... I like Sonic CD more than the other Sonic games (except possibly Sonic 1) combined, apparently, and even though the levels aren't as big as Sonic 3's, they're quite explorable and more fun to just play around in, imo. I'll take either soundtrack but ideally I'd like them both, really...

Shinobi 3 (aka SuperShinobi 2) - This is the only linear-progress game (ie, not like NiGHTS or Sonic Adventure, where you can bounce between stages as you like) I can think of that I will happily play through in a single sitting. The game is easy, I consider myself to have pretty much mastered it as far as I ever cared to, but I still just never get tired of it.

NiGHTS.

Mr. Driller (any form) - I'll get to the bottom of the 2000m hole one day, I swear it!

I would take VF4 if I were were able to play it online somehow, and Animal Crossing is another one that I'd consider, even though neither of these games are ones that I'm particularly interested in playing now. In fact, if I had access to a game for online vs, it'd be VOOT anyway. F-Zero GX is a tempting alternative for NiGHTS.

You like Project: Horned Owl? I heard that it was absolutely terrible, is it possible that's not true? I understand it was designed/directed/something by Masamune Shirow, so certainly, it's got that going for it and I wanted to like it, but I just heard it was really bad.

Compliations = CHEATING, yo. Don't be a cheater, you cheater. Why are you cheating, CHEATER?

Anyway...

1) Sonic CD - The perfect Sonic game, obviously. Screw Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Did it have time travel? NO. Did it have Metal Sonic? NO (only wussy Mecha Sonic). Did it have sweet cartoon shit? NO. This was the easiest decision I made.

2) NiGHTS into dreams - I couldn't really be stuck on a desert island without the pinnacle of Sonic team's genius, now could I?

3) Super Mario Brothers 3. I really agonised over this one. It was either this, Super Mario World or SMW2: Yoshi's Island. God doesn't like me making desicions. In the end, I chose Mario 3 mainly because of how damn hard and long it is. And on a desert island, I suppose that shit would matter. I'm such a nerd.

4) Jet Set Radio. Hey, if a rasta dude ever rescues me, at least I'll be able to prove I'm cool, right? Right?

5) Pokemon - Fire Red/Leaf Green - Yeah, shut the fuck up, okay?

If your were actually stranded on a desert island, what are they odds that you even have your games on you, and let's say you did, where's your power to play them? Think people, the Dreamcast can only think so much for you.

There's no accounting for taste and I realize there are certain intangibles when dealing with matters of personal opinion. However, you Sonic CD nuts are just plain wrong. The game is so vastly inferior to Sonic 3 & Knuckles there shouldn't be any competition at all. I'm as big an anime geek as the next guy, but damn. You losers need to get over your drooling fascination with the big-eyed, O-mouthed, off-colored, overly cute and altogether hideous Sonic from that animated intro, which I'll admit was well handled in terms of showing Sonic in motion and I was awed by it too when I was 13, but it has nothing to do with the rest of the game. The time travel feature works alright, but it's still just a gimmick. The actual game itself has absolutely no flow to speak of. The level design is random, the control is off, and the sound effects are annoying.

In short: Sonic 3 is just a better game, period. The only reason anyone would disagree is if he habitually jerks off to Evangelion porn. (I suppose I shouldn't speak about that, I've jerked off to Evangelion porn, and I hate Evangelion...)

You know what? Sonic 3 is fucking ugly. I hate the look of the sprite, and the backgrounds are all dull and uninteresting. The gameplay is "smooth" and has "flow," but that's because all the levels are flat and you just press forward to get through them all. Whenever anything cool happens it's because the designers put a loop or some high speed device that requires no interaction on the part of the player to invoke. You can't backtrack half the time because the level design is so linear, and you wouldn't want to even if you could because like Sonic Heroes the levels are so big that if you did you'd run out of time. Sonic 3 is just as glitch-ridden as Sonic CD is (fatally so in some places) until you patch it with Sonic & Knuckles, and the S&K has all the good levels in it anyway (except for Hydrocity). (Edit: May the record show that G.Silver also enjoys Ice Cap)

Sonic CD's appeal has nothing to do with Metal Sonic or its opening, it's the level design and how you can run from one end of almost any stage to another in under a minute, but combined with the time travel bit, stuff to look for, you can easily spend over ten minutes just lazily poking around enjoying the environments and exploring them from top to bottom. There's no where you can't go and you can feel free to change course at any time.

So suck it down, bitch. And if you'll excuse me, I have a rendevous with a picture of Asuka and pants are not invited.
