Genesis game recommendations

Post by Majestic Joey »

I recently got a mini gen from this company called gamers tek. It is a tiny system that plays all the genesis games. It plays really well and sounds great I have no complaints with it. This console is not to be confused with the Sega genesis from atgames that you may see at target. This console is pretty dang sick.

Anyways, I plan on buying some games that have never had rerelease and are rare and good. I'm looking for suggestions. Some games I already have are contra hard corps, rocket knight, Alisa Dragoon, ghouls and ghosts, lightning force, ranger x, light crusader, landstalker and gunstar heroes. Any other good games worth looking into buying?

Does this thing have multiplayer capabilities? If so, Combat Cars is a fun, dumb racing game.

You've probably played the licensed Animaniacs game, but in case you haven't, I'd recommend playing it through at least once, though, as the humor and gameplay are at least worth looking at. Although it might be something, honestly, to emulate once, rather than purchase.

Tinhead is also something to maybe look into. It's a platformer with less-than ideal jumping mechanics, but I honestly think it has some of the best environments and shooting mechanics on the system.

Dunno about rareness or necessarily re-releases (Gunstar Heroes has several) but I would consider:

El Viento
Gaiares
Target Earth
Beyond Oasis
Crusader of Centy
Trouble Shooter
Castle of Illusion

Re-releases definitely available:
Shinobi 3
Revenge of Shinobi
Ristar
Dynamite Headdy

if you have tons of money (and if the Mini Gen will play imports):
Alien Solider
Pulseman
Battlemania

I think I'm going to try and save up for trouble shooter and battle mania 2. El viento looks pretty good. Has anybody played the valis series? I heard they are decent but when I look at the walk speed of the character the game seems too slow for my taste. I kind of just want to get a valis game just because she is a video game character that literally got sold into pornography.

Anyways this mini gen is pretty cool. It plays import games as well. The console isn't hdmi though but has AV cords instead of the genesis tv antenna adapter. Also it was only $30 bucks.

Sonic 1-3 were pretty good. Gunstar Heroes is a must have shoot 'em up. Also Phantasy Star IV was the Genesis' Final Fantasy VI. That pretty much sums it up for me.

EDIT: Fuck, forgot ToeJam & Earl and Earthworm Jim.

I've tried a few Valis games and didn't really care for any of them. Not even the SD one. It was a long time ago and I didn't really put that much time into them so I've never been sure if maybe they weren't all that good or if it was just me. And supposedly the PCE/TG16 versions are the best ones for some reason, so if you're serious about giving it a go you probably want to skip the Sega versions anyway. In retrospect they kinda seem like less-good Castlevanias, with the added benefit of all that bikini armor, of course. I do think it's really interesting that it came back as porn. It always had some inspirational ties to stuff like Demon Hunter Yoko and that kind of thing, so in a way it didn't really seem all that surprising.. I'm really curious how that was received by fans, especially in Japan. It seems to me like it might be less really selling out and maybe making the series what it was actually meant to be from the beginning.

I don't know if you are a fan of Tiny Toons, but regardless, 'Buster's Hidden Treasure' is an excellent platformer, that, imo, is one of the best titles on the system.

Aladdin on Genesis is vastly superior to the SNES version.

Rocket Knight Adventures, (expensive!) Quackshot and Mickey Mania are a blast too.

I'll have to try these licensed Disney platformers. It still weirds me out how the quality of licensed games were so good back then.

Seconding Aladdin. It's honestly one of the better platform games on the system.

In addition to Aladdin, I also recommend Cool Spot and The Jungle Book, which were made by some of the same team.

Surprised no one mentioned Streets of Rage 2. Probably my favorite beat-em-up on the system, with a kick-ass soundtrack to boot. Second would be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Hyperstone Heist; not as colorful/big as Turtles in Time, but it has superior controls and music, in my opinion.

I was replaying pac-man 2: the new adventures. That game was ahead of its time. It's a point and click adventure game where you don't control your character really at all. Also Pac-man is affected by his moods and is so well animated.

Also from an artistic standpoint the game is so awesome. Here you have an iconic video game legend who is now married with 2 kids and is stuck doing mundane tasks for his family and living in the suburbs. It's somewhat sobering seeing an iconic character being shown unidealized. This game is should be titled Midlife Crisis: the game.

I ended up getting Valis 3 and el viento. Both games were pretty good.
Valis's walk speed is pretty slow but the platforming is still challenging. I kept dying at first because I didn't know you could do a high jump by holding up on the d-pad while jumping. The last boss in that game is also has a really cool background. Overall it was a cool game.

El viento is awesome. I loved how fast it was and how unbelievably ridiculous some of the level design is. This game really does show how far level design has come. But yeah the game was fun and fast paced and controlled well and everything explodes in that game which is also awesome.

Tonight I finished Light Crusader. I never got into it as a kid because the graveyard music was too scary. Now that I'm older and braver I played and beat the whole game. I thought this game was a really good action RPG. The puzzles were well thought out and the platforming isn't too bad once you get used to the perspective. The bosses were kind of hard to figure out attack patterns but the game gives you a lot of health and items so you can just run in and attack. The game did feel kind of easy and the story was nothing special but still it was a really fun game. It's a really good underrated game by Treasure.

Next game I'm going to play is Blades of Vengeance. Hoping that game is good.

If anybody has any other game suggestions let me know.

So I got a repo cartridge of Alien Soldier ( I got it from this site. The quality of them are pretty good: https://genesisrepros.com/ ). It took me all of summer, but I finally beat Alien Soldier on superhard difficulty. I got to say I did not like this game that much when I first started playing it but now I have to say it may be one of my favorite genesis games. Everything about that game is amazing. I cannot recommend it enough.

Been really enjoying collecting sega genesis games. Twinkle Tale, BattleMania, The Misadventures of Flink, I honestly cannot believe how amazing the genesis library actually is. In terms of action games, the genesis may have one of the best lineups of games a console has ever had.

Next game I'm getting is a repo cart of crusader of centy. I heard people claim it's a zelda clone but after looking at some gameplay and story it looks like it may actually have more depth than that.
