Ohshima on social media

Post by Dr. BUGMAN »

So photographic proof of the (still extant?) fabled clay model. Apparently there were more than just the one!:

Image

Sculpted by Taku Makino.

These belong in museums, I don't think it's too hyperbolic to say.

The sculpture was shown in EGM, so I wouldn't say fabled. I assume it also made some rounds in Japanese magazines at the time, too.

Image
(Here's page 2 if you want.)

Ohshima posted that picture on Facebook, and kinda gave the impression that the original was gone (he may have been talking about something else) so I think these are either reproductions or maybe (at best) based on a cast of the original.

It's interesting that these have a buckle. It doesn't seem possible to tell if there's a buckle or not in the EGM photos, but it seems likely that it's there. I always thought the buckle must have been added afterwards in the art, on the whims of whoever was designing it at the time. Or has that been explained somewhere? It would be funny if the entire reason Sonic doesn't have a buckle in the games is because the pose in the key art (and the equivalent viewing angle of the sculpture) obscures it from view. :)

Man, look how shitty the Kid Robot sculpt of this same pose is by comparison. I thought that maybe it was just an awkward pose when viewed from other angles, but seeing Makino's version that plainly isn't the case.

I love the photo with Ohshima just totally ignoring the camera. I wonder if he even looked up afterwards.

Oshima has started tweeting old sketches of his work. I didn't realize that he had worked on some (all?) of the screen saver artwork.

I'm guessing other artists probably stepped in for some of it, and they probably had other people who did airbrushing, too. This is the first time we've seen any credit given to any of those drawings, isn't it?

Yes, this is the first time there has been credit. Although, I think some of the art had an illegible signature on them (but I might be misremembering).

In Oshima's tweets it sounds like he didn't do the colouring. Which makes sense, because he didn't do the colouring for the Sonic 1 box art either.

Comparing it to the final, his left foot changed, the trunk of the palm on his left lacks its trunk, and the palm of his right became a mountain. Note also, this is one the vignettes lacking a signature. I mean, I guess the signature could be read "O(hshima). Naoto", and the thought crossed my mind before but I have a problem of spouting wild conjecture as it is.

Also hahahaha you dirty old bastard.

Oshima posted this:

Here's a machine translation of his comments:
Published only on Twitter. In adventure, I performed editing with a storyboard in a short period of time, but the impact was weak in the boss, so I changed the design and made it. I think that Director Iizuka had a hard time

It sounds like he redesigned Chaos. That would be a big contribution to the game, so it makes the removal of his name from the end credits even more puzzling.

The 1993 image actually appeared in a Sonic card set that was released in Japan. Scans of the cards were on the Japanese Act Select website, but the site seems to have been deleted (Where did you go HariHari?! I guess that makes him the Japanese GG!)

A mockup of DCT's tour flyer? Not as glamorous as the others, but still interesting I suppose.

Haha, seems like he just now realized how much attention posting production stuff would garner him! There's even Burning Ranger and (I think) Rent-a-Hero stuff. What's extra-interesting to me is apparently Fang's creator was involved to some degree with Nights into Dreams.

Identical(?) to the orthographic leaked years ago, but now with side view:

I haven't paid much mind to MS's crest before, but it must've have gone through changes through the years particularly in thickness. Here it's razor thin throughout with bends in it.

But, WHO CARES LOOK AT THIS OMG!!!:

It's pretty likely he was responsible for Sonic Drift 1's art, I'd say.

It's kinda weird that they took the concept of a living car friend and gave it to... Amy, of all people.

That's lovely. Fingers crossed that some talented fan can colour it in (or whatever the finishing process is called).

I am certain I've seen Sonic in that exact same pose before in a "finished" picture, but not with the other animals. Has anyone else seen it before? He might not have been painting. It wasn't in Sonic Screen Saver.

Also related to Ohshima on social media, he wished me a happy birthday on Facebook the other day. (Apparently I'm not the only one.) This is a pretty serious level of social media engagement he's in.

NOW it's officially a return to form! Now if they can get Yasuhara to map out a level or two... (He can't be so happy at NST making Mini Mario games that he wouldn't leave...)
