Didn't they say in Sonic Battle that he gets money from selling bots and stealing?

Hm, you're right. Nothing about stealing that I can find, but Rouge says "The doctor sold these Guard Robos just to make extra cash on the side." Not that I take Sonic Battle as canon. But if he was going to make money, that's probably how he'd do it. Selling inferior bots for commercial use (that he would surely retain control over) would take almost no effort. He could even build a bot to handle the transaction and delivery for him.

Hey, you don't suppose this scene is a joke that Sonic is a hedgehog that's allergic to hedges?

I think he's a bit more diversified than that. He has oil extractors/refineries in Sonic 2, Sonic 4: Episode 2, and Sonic Adventure 2. He's owned casinos and theme parks, manufactures weapons and security equipment (MeteorTech), and it's implied that he manufactures and sells most commercially available Extreme Gear. He's engaged in industrial espionage against the Rimlight Corporation in Sonic '06, and has probably sold or incorporated into his products that stolen technology. And then if he actually has an empire with territory and a civilian population, he probably taxes them as well.

Honestly, I don't get why Eggman wants to forcefully take over the world when he's already such a big player on it economically. Sonic Adventure 2 has probably the first time his ambitions were explicitly global (as opposed to taking over an isolated island, planetoid, or a single city) and he threatened the sovereignity of an established and powerful nation-state, right to their president, no less! If the events of Sonic Adventure 2 somehow happened in real life, Eggman's assets would be seized, his bank accounts frozen, and he would be labeled as a fugitive terrorist.

Question: If Black Doom and his troops needed food so badly, why didn't they just conquer Planet Wisp? If Eggman could do it with a few robots and a big chain, why didn't B.D. just plop his base of operations there instead of giving his DNA to some guy on a space station and waiting around for half a century?

The issue is that the Black Comet can't enter a planet's atmosphere without disintegrating in its atmosphere. That's why they needed the Chaos Emeralds to instantly teleport it to Earth's surface via Chaos Control in Shadow the Hedgehog. I imagine the problem with Planet Wisp is that there are no Chaos Emeralds there, so unless you're willing to capture a million Hover Wisps, good luck getting the Black Comet down to the surface.

In the comics, the reminants of the Black Arms stop at Planet Wisp to capture some Wisps to develop as weapons, but they are quoted as not having conquered the planet because they were in a hurry to get to Earth.

I don't like the lore of any of the post-Adventure games, obviously, but out of fairness it doesn't lack complete sense that the Brick Dimestores would be totally unaware of Planet Whatchamacallit's existence considering how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big space is. Furthermore Buck Dimwits could've only been privy of Planet Freedom on account of the CEs immense energy drawing them there.

Also, Archie's Eclipse arc made meglad I only ever pirate their comic.

So I found myself pondering this "ultimate lifeform" horse excreta. No doubt anyone smarter than a slime mold picked up on the hints in SA2 that it's Sonic who's the ultimate lifeforms with Hot Topic Felix and Acne the Bi-Curious Newt both being merely prototypes; there's the whole " Sonic can perfrom Chaos Control" bit and also him being able to get back to the Ark by seemingly his own volition while Shadow plummeted planetward seemingly out of exhaustion (let's presume this, a) had nothing to do with the prior fight taking its toll, and, b) foolish melodramatic histrionics).

Of course the one thing Shadow and Biolizard have in common with their extraterrestrial forebears are their black-and-red coloring. But Sonic's blue, obviously, but so is Chaos (also: green eyes). Now Prof. Gerald McBoing-Boing was obviously cognizant of Chaos, hence all those artificial Chaoses littered about the Ark. So we're to infer that Sonic is a donee of Chaos blood (protoplasm?) as well? Moreover would this make him part Chao?

As for the Chao. Wouldn't their ability to become reasonable facsimiles of Sonic and friends hint that they are in some manner the basis for _all_ the funny animals in this series, making Sonic some kind of incestuous chimera??

The only plausible and non-nauseating explanation for this is that everything on Sonic's World are gigantic bacteria, reproducing asexually via splitting and occasionally latching onto each other each other with stinging tendrils to exchange genetic information.

Sonic 1 manual: "Your friends are henceforth under my control. The entire island has now become your enemy! Bwa ha ha ha ha ha... This time, the whole world will be mine!"
Wombatwarlord777 wrote:If the events of Sonic Adventure 2 somehow happened in real life, Eggman's assets would be seized, his bank accounts frozen, and he would be labeled as a fugitive terrorist.
This is part of why I think he's more or less resource independent. Though if he were selling arms to global super powers, he could get away with pretty much anything.

If this were an insurmountable problem then that would mean that ShTH was the first time they ever ran out of energy/food. The Black Arms clearly have ship-to-planet vessels because their troops had to land on Earth somehow, so their normal procedure is probably to transport resources back from the surface manually. Black Doom says "humans are a great energy source for us" and proceeds to have his minions munch on Sonic and co., so life forms are one of those resources. Gaining the ability to enter the atmosphere just allows the Black Comet to drop its tendrils into the planet and drain its energy (or whatever) more quickly and efficiently. It also allows them to flood the atmosphere with that paralysis gas, which would make harvesting the planet's life forms less messy.

Please tell me this is already a fanfic. I want to read the scene where Sonic and Shadow realize that they're brothers and Eggman is their estranged nephew.

Does anyone have a VBA save file of Sonic Advance 3? While I'm updating the emerald chart I figured I'd replace the jpged emerald sprites (apparently I was lazy the first time and ripped half of it from here) and I seem to have erased my ROM some time ago.

More Burning Questions About The Sonic The Hedgehog Franchise Answered
With each successive Sonic the Hedgehog game, fans come up with all sorts of questions about the series. Where does Sonic live? How much can you get for a Chaos Emerald? What is up with Sonic's eyes? I sat down with head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka and art director Kazuyuki Hoshino to ask them some of the most burning questions on behalf of the entire Sonic fan base.

For even more burning questions about the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, head here.

Does Sonic live in Green Hill Zone, or does he just visit there often?

Takashi Iizuka: He does not live in the Green Hill Zone, he just enjoys running around it. He visits often.

Does he live in any particular Zone?

Iizuka: Sonic does not have a house. He's just constantly on the move and enjoying wherever life takes him.

What's the hottest vacation destination in Sonic's world?

Iizuka: Emerald Coast.

If I got a Chaos Emerald, how much could I sell that for?

Kazuyuki Hoshino: [laughs] Priceless!

What about eBay? Everything has a price there!

Iizuka: [laughs] It's priceless! I couldn't put a price on it.

Does Sonic have one eye with two pupils in it? What's going on with his eyes?

Hoshino: [Holds head, laughs]

Iizuka: [laughs] He does have two separate eyeballs. It may look like they're connected, but they are two separate eyeballs.

What about Metal Sonic?

Hoshino: It's not eyeballs. It's monitors with a camera behind the monitor.

What does Metal Sonic do in his free time?

Hoshino: [laughs] Idling!

Has anybody noticed that Mighty the Armadillo is missing?

Iizuka: Mighty is a part of the Classic world and the Classic group of characters, and some of the Chaotix did get interpreted for the Modern vision of the games. However, Mighty still exists in the Classic world, so maybe we'll see him in the future in some Classic iteration.

Hoshino: How popular is he? [laughs]

What is Chaos up to these days?

Iizuka: Good question! We probably think you'll see him again soon.

Is Mephiles still hanging around?

Iizuka: Mephiles was created for the Sonic the Hedgehog game we published in 2006. He existed in that world and was very useful for that narrative, but we don't have any future plans for having Mephiles show up.

What about Princess Elise? Has she moved on to another Hedgehog love interest?

Iizuka: [laughs] She's probably just hanging out in the human world, enjoying her life as a princess. Maybe she's a queen now. We're not really sure.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Eggman blew up the moon. Is the moon still in pieces?

Iizuka: As we see the moon as it's presented in Sonic games now, we see one side and it looks very nice and presentable. However, maybe the dark side of the moon is how everyone remembers it to be.

Did that affect the tides at all?

Iizuka: [laughs] No... no.

How many Tornado planes have Sonic and Tails crashed at this point?

Iizuka: [laughs] I haven't counted how many. These are very unique questions!

It used to be that Eggman was the sole human. Starting with Sonic Adventure, we're seeing more and more humans show up in the stories. Where are they all coming from?

Iizuka: The world that Sonic lives in and the world the humans live in are separate worlds. But, some of the canon games do have Sonic and humans together, and part of that is based on what world is being portrayed when the game is developed. There are kind of different worlds that do exist and sometimes there's some crossover.

Sonic and Mario have now competed in a few different games now. Who is Sonic's best friend from Mario's crew?

Iizuka: We believe it's probably Sonic and Mario, so that although there's that rivalry there, we think there's really a good friendship as well.

What athletic event do you think Mario could possibly beat Sonic in?

Iizuka: Trampoline! [laughs]

What happened to all of the Super Emeralds?

Iizuka: The Super Emeralds really only existed in the Sonic & Knuckles game and that's the only place they're going to exist in the Modern versions of Sonic the Hedgehog we have now.

Hoshino: They're gone. I don't know how it happened, but they're gone.

Has Dr. Eggman given up building Death Eggs?

Iizuka: Dr. Eggman does like thinking of sinister, malicious things to do and create, so most likely he'll probably try it again.

The next game released after Sonic Adventure 2 was Sonic Advance. Sonic Advance ends with Super Sonic fighting Eggman on the moon for some reason. If I were Iizuka I'd just say that Super Sonic repaired the moon in Sonic Advance and leave it at that!

It turns out Pocket Adventure has the same problem as G-Sonic where it includes 3 completely different emerald shapes in different parts of the game.

That has to be the greatest interview ever! Although I wished they went really nerdy and asked about Bark, Bean, Fang and the timeline.

Some thoughts:
Classic games
It's strange. In an earlier interview Iizuka said Bark, Fang, Bean and Espio weren't part of the classic series, but now Mighty is. It also sounds like Chaotix is part of the classic storyline even though in other interviews he implied that the Team Chaotix in Heroes were new characters.

It also sounds like Mania is not going to be the last in the Classic series....

Worlds
He once again talks about there being two worlds. Although here it sounds like there's more than two, such as a classic world which still has Mighty and Super Emeralds. It also sounds like the Super Emeralds disappeared rather being retconned out.

Moon
We've never seen the moon up close, so I guess the reasoning could work. I'd prefer the Advance being the game that healed it (like Crazy Penguin mentioned). But the again, Cream appears in SADX, so I am not sure if that means the Advance games take place before Adventure.

^ Woah! So in Sonic Forces there's a new screenshot showing Classic Sonic. Someone taunts him and says he's from another dimension.

So I guess that means Classic Sonic is from a different world than Modern Sonic.

But then again Modern Sonic makes references to his Classic days in Adventure and in Generations (unless Modern has lived a similar life to Classic). But then Generation's Modern refers to Classic as his younger self... it makes no sense.

You'd think being custodian of this one brand, he'd put more thought into this instead of contradicting himself. I think a Hyrule Historia-style delineation of what's what and the whys and wherefores is in order, but Iizuka may be savvy enough that'd require effort and integrity.

But no, he clearly doesn't care. Not that that upsets me on a personal level, but it's his one fucking job and this franchise is one of the medium's biggest icon and he just doesn't care. There are people who put their heart and soul into their work and typically wallow in relative obscurity, and here Iizuka is like a teen who inherited a Ferrari and doesn't feel like maintaining it.

Classic Sonic's return in Generations was supposed to be one-off, but it now looks like it's going to be an ongoing series.

I wonder if Iizuka split Sonic into two separate Sonics to give themselves more wiggle room, so they won't have to worry about doing something in the Classic series that could contradict Modern (especially as it looks like the Classic series is going to be bringing back things that Modern dropped).

Also, Sonic games have stopped having on-going stories since Sonic 2006 (which is around the time Shiro Maekawa step down as story writer). Since then, they've all been standalone, with just a few continuity references thrown in as a bonus. I don't think it's Iizuka doesn't care, it's just that creating a growing world is no longer a priority because everything is now a one-off.

I love it when developers make up a whole convoluted universe for their characters, tying every game into the web (like a certain asparagus-coloured primate used to do). They should go further, though. Do Elise and Princess Sara get along, or are they rivals because Elise told Sara that "her dad HAD to have fucked a cat"? That's a game right there. What happened to Speedy during the events of Shadow the Hedgehog? Will Omochao and Gemerl ever start that small photocopying business? These questions need to be answered and they need to be answered officially.

I once read a fan theory that put forth the idea that the handheld games up until and including Sonic 06 were all in their own continuity. Then, with the time shenanigans in that game, the world was "rebooted" into starting with the Mega Drive original and continued on from there. Hey, that takes care of the moon!

Nerdy Sonic Adventure stuff:
https://tcrf.net/Sonic_Adventure_(Dream ... ifferences

It seems in the Japanese version of Sonic Adventure, Amy's power-up is called "FIGHTERS FEATHER" (a reference to Sonic the Fighters?). It was changed to WARRIOR FEATHER for the internal version (And Warrior could very easily be a mistranslation of Fighters, as I believe it's the same word in Japanese). They also swapped Eggman with Robotnik in the text used for the graphic.

We might be dealing with a translation of a translation. Since the game was inspired by Mayan and Aztec culture, it may have been meant to reference Mayan/Aztec/Knuckle warriors, and the English translators picked up on that and went with warrior instead of fighter.

Gathering the Pinball Party events got me thinking. What's the origin of the spin dash? How is everyone able to do it? You'd think it would be a signature move for Sonic, and it's believable that Tails could've learned to do it by imitating Sonic, but Knuckles was able to do it before they even met. That means there's some history to it - perhaps as ancient as the Knuckle clan itself. Even little 6-year-old Cream was able to do it on her first outting, so maybe it's something innate to certain species of anthro. Or maybe it's a cultural thing they all learn to do as kids, like riding a bicycle. Depending on how young they learn it, I imagine it would make childproofing the house somewhat more involved.
