Polygon have interviewed some of the key players that shaped Sonic’s evolution. Surprisingly, there’s no input from the original Sonic Team, although Al Nilsen and Christian Whitehead share their insights.

Iizuka says all the right things about Sonic needing to focus on quality and staying true to his roots, but he made most of these comments before the release of Sonic 4.
Although, somewhat surprisingly, even though he wasn’t directly involved with it, he seems to have been greatly impacted by the fallout of Sonic Boom.

There isn’t anything new revealed in the interview although Iizuka mentions they plan to use the current modern Sonic design for another 5 to 10 years. Nilsen also makes a comment about Mobius, which suggests the brand is still quite close to his heart.
