SegaSonic Popcorn Shop has been dumped. I always thought it was some cheapo merchandise tie-in, but Sega put a surprising amount of effort into the animations and visuals.

Hopefully, Cosmo Fighter can be found and dumped to complete the SegaSonic series.

I hope so too, cuz once they run out of obscure Sonic PCBs to dump, surely they'll have to start dumping obscure Mario PCBs next, right? :<

Space Tours ('94) has video components, too, surely.

Wow, I never knew about Space Tours. Although does it have video game elements? The photo is too small to tell (at least for me!)

It was in the Gems Collection museum along with Patrol Car and Popcorn Shop, etc. But considering they didn't also include screenshots of Space Tours like they did for the others maybe I'm mistaken.

It does look like the Tornado implausibly flying through space (or a starry night sky), I think.

So, apparently that same guy who dumped this rom is now teasing a prototype of the Sonic Arcade game called "Sega Sonic Bros," and featuring multiple colored Sonics:

I can't confirm that it's real, but this does corroborate with an old article that I just happen to remember from issue 32 (March 1992) of EGM. Sure, it's 24 years later but why would a huge nerd ever forget a thing like this?

http://starquail.com/michael/quartmannE ... 992p38.png
EGM's Quartermann wrote:Sonic will also make sequel appearances in both a cartridge-based game as well as an arcade game on Sega's System 32 that invites multiple players to assume the role of different colored Sonics!
Later Sega Sonic arcade was revealed (EGM had a big article on that too, you might recall) and when I saw that I just assumed that this original post's source was from somebody who was just confused and didn't know one stylized animal from another, or maybe didn't even get that good a look at the game (if he even saw it first hand). Basically since the rumor had multiple players and characters of different primary colors, so that was good enough for me.

Anyway, neat. I wonder if we'll see more of it.

Neat find with EGM article, G.Silver!

In 1992, Mr Kanari, the forgotten (non?)creator of Sonic talked about expanding Sonic's family in the games:
Many readers of MEGAFORCE wished that Sonic has a boyfriend. Is it considered and is he/it foreseen that new characters rejoin Sonic thereafter?
MK: Indeed, we noted that the public wished that Sonic has friends. Several projects are currently to the survey and it is not excluded that Sonic has a boyfriend thereafter. Of the remainder, a magazine of strips drawn Japanese publishes a set dedicated to Sonic regularly. In this comic, Sonic have a family and friends, then why not to make in the same way in a game?
(It's a translation from a French magazine.) Perhaps SegaSonic Bros was part of that thinking.

I'm glad it was scrapped - it looks like some fan creation.

I think it looks cool! :>

Another update on this: http://shoutime.tumblr.com/post/1387353 ... ourself-or

The interesting detail here is that it was designed by Fukio Mitsuji, the designer of Bubble Bobble. But the question on my mind is how would someone who just happened to have this rom know that? Considering so few arcade games ever actually have credits, this is a surprising detail for a game that's completely undocumented.

I have to say that "multiplayer game like Bubble Bobble + Sonic" definitely piques my interest.

Oh hey, another EGM reference, this time from issue 46 (I didn't remember this one but I do have the issue--TSSZ had the link):

http://retrocdn.net/index.php?title=Fil ... df&page=52

This one mentions two unreleased Sonic Arcade games, but I'd suspect that the second one is actually the SegaSonic arcade that we already know (and love?) and Al Nilsen was either referring to it not releasing in the US or unaware that it (edit: was about to be..) released in Japan. (Was it "officially" released in the UK?)

His comments on Sonic CD are really curious--obviously they'd been talking about Sonic CD since before Sonic 2 even came out, EGM had screens of Sonic CD as we know it in two earlier issues, in particularly issue 44 (two months earlier) had a substantial number of screens. Assuming he said this prior to printing--we'll go with April 1993--Sonic CD released in Japan in September the same year. It's pretty crazy to think that Sonic CD was only six months away and here he is saying there's no schedule for it, and that he doesn't even know if it would be at CES that year. Makes you wonder at what point they decided they needed to get that alternate soundtrack made. Anyway I just say this because it really goes to show that what people at SoA knew or at least were saying does not necessarily reflect what was happening in Japan.

The plot thickens!

The lyrics check out - with references to brothers "different as red and blue", and a line about moving at the speed of sound and spinning round. It makes me wonder if the game had any other music that was repurposed.

But what role did Yellow Sonic play if it was a 2 player game?

How do people know this song was related? In the CD's liner notes or something?

Apparently this is the source for the info about Fukio Mitsuji and the location test. I guess all you have to do is google "SegaSonic Bros" in Japanese, maybe?

https://twitter.com/bluparadox/status/6 ... 6226934784

And the destination link: http://ittells.jp/community/topicdetail ... eId=126607

It's in Japanese but google translate will tell you what you wanna know--it's by Mitsuji, it failed the location test, and it's some kind of block-based puzzle game... At this rate maybe we'll know all about the game before it even gets dumped... :)

I didn't have the desire for a more thorough search through all the results for a Japanese google search (ソニックブラザーズ--I recommend "in quotes" to reduce all the smash bros links..) but I did find the original tweet that image came from. Surprise! It's Yosuke Okunari, one of the guys behind the M2 3D Classics! Here he seems to be clarifying the gameplay in response to that post from the guy at the ittells.jp link. Considering the wealth of Sega material those guys have access to I guess it isn't surprising that he'd have access to unreleased PCBs as well..

I also found this curious site. As far as I can tell, it's a list of games not supported by Mame, and for some reason "Sonic Brothers" is on that list.

They've posted translations of everything on Sonic Retro:
http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=35221

I like the artwork, and the game is neat as a historical oddity. However, if it was actually released I would have been disappointed. It just seems to be a merchandising spin-off as opposed to a true Sonic game (along the lines of Sonic Eraser). Sonic's brothers are just simple recolours. They haven't made any effort to vary their designs.

So it was basically Konami's Puzzle-dama series before it was one, where you match three of the same color? Eh. Guess we didn't miss much after all.

The impression I got was that it isn't a match-3 or anything like that, blocks of one color will disappear when surrounded by blocks of another color on the sides and bottom (but not the top, apparently). Some people are comparing it to Cleopatra Fortune, though I'm not sure that's entirely accurate either.

I'm not like, itching to play that sort of puzzle game but I am a bit curious to see it running. Definitely want this bag, though: http://shoutime.tumblr.com/image/138859404708

^ A picture of the brothers in action. The blocks in the game are actually their heads.

^ Apparently the guy who found this (Shou) can't release the dump of it, as if he does he won't be able to get any more rare games.
He has made a dump for safe keeping.

I wonder where the source of him saying that is.

I have to wonder, then, how much of what he shows on his tumblr is actually his? I guess we should be glad he's "allowed" to show screens and video of any of it at all. And yet for other games he's cryptically taking "donations for immediate release."
