So obvious it doesn't really need pointing out, but of course Mario 2 was not originally a Mario game.

Well, apparently Shadow Hog didn't know!

Also, the way that cover is drawn, it kind of looks like Mario has no legs and instead wears a shoe on his dick.

Of course I knew, but it's pretty much Mario canon now, what with Shy Guys, Snifits, Birdos and Bob-ombs crawling out Bowser's rectum in every game since. So there.

Actually one of my favorite entries in the series, tbh. It'd be kinda nifty if they actually went and, I dunno, made a sequel of sorts. Sure, it'd be breaking with the current gameplay shtick of Mario, but then, so was the original! (And Yoshi's Island, Super Princess Peach, and the entire Wario line of games...)

Another thing that pisses me off is all this "Bowser" nonsense. Where the hell did that originate? He's always been called "Koopa" here. I even distinctly remember him being referred to as such in the old American cartoon show. To me he's always been "Koopa", but all of a sudden one day everyone's saying "Bowser". Did I miss something?

I assume you were also upset when Dr Robotnik started referring to himself as Dr Eggman.

What happened to Princess Peach being called Princess Toadstool? That was a much better name.

Considering how most of the Koopalings were renamed after then-famous musicians, it'd only stand to reason that he was renamed after Bowser from Sha Na Na.

(and contrary to popular internet idiot belief, he was 'Bowser' since the original SMB, NOT SMB3).

And while I actually prefer 'Bowser' and 'Robotnik', going back to 'Peach' just fit the character better.

Yes, yes, NERD.

Actually, isn't it supposed to be Kuppa? (クッパ) I could never understand how you would romanize that into "Koopa".

I mean, NERD

Come to think of it, the only localization I cannot wrap my head around is Lakitu's name. Where the hell that come from? certainly not Japan where he's known as Jugem.

All the English names come from the NES Super Mario Bros manual and/or Nintendo's official (and excellent) How to Win at Super Mario Bros, which I no longer have but it was quite extensive and charming for the time. HtWaSMB I believe had the most canonical plot story I've ever heard regarding Mario's arrival in the Mushroom Kingdom. It seems that when he heard of the plight of the Mushroom Kingdom, he just went there. End of story!

Anyway, Bowser was his given name from day one in the US, as the leader of the "Koopa Clan." This makes his full name Bowser Koopa, and let me tell you, it was very distressing for me to hear him referred to all the time as "Koopa" in the cartoons. Seemed impersonal!

So somewhat the reverse of Eggman Robotnik's situation, then.

I mean the name itself. I know 'Goomba' is a slur regarding Italian Americans, which make some kind of sense, but 'Lakitu' leaves me baffled. Was it the surname of eccentric bookworm that work in accounting for NOA way back when? Mysterious!

Seriously, it keeps me awake at night.

I was kind of blown away when I got a SNES and Super Mario World. The "Bowser" illustrations in the instruction manual were very different to the "King Koopa" of the DiC cartoons.

When did "Koopa Troopas" become just "Koopas"?

Was anyone else confused by the round Goombas in Super Mario World that couldn't be stomped flat but could be picked up? Turns out they were called Kuribon in Japan, as opposed to the regular Kuribo. So weird that one of the most memorable Mario games, that very much followed the traditional formula, didn't have a single proper Goomba in it.

Precisely!

Now they should remove all this Americanism and give Sonic back his fangs and hot older wife.

I know. That comment was meant as a joke, since I assume the Koopa/Bowser situation is pretty much the same thing.
