I'm playing Sega All-Stars Racing. It's made me realize that I actually love Billy Hatcher's character design, music, and world theme. It's too bad his game's mechanics and level designs were mediocre. Guu mouningu!

And it's a good Mario Kart rip-off. It actually improves on what Nintendo has done, though more weapons would've been nice.

F-Zero GX. Not too good at it yet (only clear novice difficulties), but hopefully I'll get a tighter grip on things, especially the cylinder courses. That is, if I don't keep wasting my time in Free Run where I try to KO all of the computer players as fast as possible.

Since I've found an emulator that can handle it, I've been playin' Shantae. S'aright, not worth the hundreds it goes for on eBay. It's a throwback to NES adventure platformers for sure, like Zelda II. I'm talking writin' notes down old-school. Thankfully I've got enough rhythm to rake in cash to buy shit, which is really something when you consider most games nowadays throw more money at you than you know what to do with. Here a small potion runs you 50 when you can carry at max of 999. Hardcore shit.

On the other hand, the level of cheesecake is something else. If a woman doesn't have DDs and a waist you can wrap your thumb and index finger around, she's a grotesque slob. This seems prevalent among WayForward's original IPs, disturbingly enough.

The biggest difference is the ability to turn off the stupid fucking rubber-band AI, and it makes the game really enjoyable. I don't know why Nintendo doesn't do this.

I started Xenoblade a few weeks ago. The menus are confusing and there's a lot of minute details that are beyond my level to interpret, but I haven't encountered any major problems so far which leads me to believe that all the little micro options are pretty inconsequential. It's actually not bad, though it's very squarely focused (like most Japanese games) at an audience about a decade younger than me. (It's occured to me since coming here that grown-ups in Japan do not play games except for some occasional Dragon Quest or whatever they can carry on their cell phones.)

The world is pretty bizarre. The whole thing takes place on the mummified body of a giant nature god who died locked in battle with a giant machine god and now machines from the machine god are attacking people on the nature god. And of course you control the teenage boy with the magic sword that has powers (in this case, foreseeing potential deaths) only he can unlock.

You don't actually control attacking in combat - as long as you're close enough to the enemies, your characters attack automatically at intervals. Basically you just run around dodging and launching special attacks when your meters are full enough. It's a bit too much going on for my taste (how I sorely miss the turn-based days), but y'know... 'snot my world anymore.

Also, when you swap out armor, your characters appearances actually change. You can even take off all their armor and have them running around in their underwear. Naturally, I have all the women on my team in their scanties, defense be damned. I really thought I'd outgrown that sort of thing, but apparently not.

One other thing I forgot to mention, the music is great!

Also a few weeks ago I finished Kage no Tou, which is pretty good for the first half and then it really starts to drag. The mechanics are solid, but there's very little variation from one stage to the next, either in terms of graphics or level design. So, it gets old faster than it should. I doubt I'd have bothered finishing it at all except the last like, four stages I thought were the final one, so each time I was like, "Well, I've come this far, I may as well finish it up."

Still not bad, though. Definitely the most noteworthy thing to come out of Hudson anytime in recent memory. Before it came out, I was actually under the impression that it was supposed to be a WiiWare game...

I'm playing Metroid Fusion again in light of the series' latest outing, and appreciating it a bit more as a result. Watching speedruns of it was also inspiring. If only these DS controls were a little more comfortable...

I really like Metroid Fusion, people rag on it for its linearity but, to be honest, non-linearity is not a make-or-break thing for me in games. It's okay when done well (and other Metroid games certainly do it well), but I thought Fusion made proper use of the strengths of linear games (better storytelling), so I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's not just the linearity; the fact Adam barks paragraphs worth of orders at 15wpm (30 if you mash the B button) two lines at a time multiple times throughout, kills the pacing of a game, removing any sense of discovery in the process.
