Arcade, this is actually coherent and on topic. So I'm reading Scott Pilgrim
Re: So I'm reading Scott Pilgrim
Re: So I'm reading Scott Pilgrim
I don't get Scott Pilgrim. It makes me feel all weird. On the one hand it's all cool and pop-culture-savvy and full of things I can relate to: ie, video games, garage bands, Rickenbackers and girl trouble. (And after my year spent in Alberta, it also has a hell of a lot of nostalgia appeal for me in terms of its whole Canadian vibe... the snow, the scarves-and-skirts winter fashion, and the garage band culture that seems to flourish over there, probably thanks in part to the soundproof basements built into houses as standard in every Canadian suburb - it all teleports me back to a time, place and culture that I still, weirdly, miss. Bioware are still looking for writers, maybe I'll apply.)
So, yeah, I read the comics, inevitably borrowed from friends or colleagues, and... I don't know, I'm just bored, really, because the stories and characters are as thin as the paper they're printed on, they're all just brash one-shot cartoons with no depth. And I actually struggle following the stories generally, because all the characters look so damn alike. But, yeah, as Silv said, the biggest problem for me is also the biggest appeal. I'm drawn to these comics because they're full of that neato nerd-pop-culture stuff, but it's just too perfect, too cool, too cutesy-cool-indie to accept. I keep going back to the damn things because I'm craving a nerd-pop fix, but they never do the trick because on some weird fundamental level Scott Pilgrim's just too cool, and it ends up weird and fake.
I have high hopes for the movie, though. I like Edgar Wright, and I think seeing the whole thing in clarified live-action terms might sort a few issues out for me. I was never that keen on the art style anyway.
In other news, I'm Facebook pals with the singer of the band who wrote the song the comic is named after. How cool is that? I'm practically famous.

When I started reading that post, it didn't strike me quite right as something Crazy Penguin would say. Then I noticed it was written by the other guy with a green name.
How's life, Popcorn? Haven't seen you in a while.
(Can't really share my opinion on the topic at hand since I'm completely out of the loop here)

As far as i concerned, there is no such thing as a worthwile comic book that doesn't involve men in tight pyjamases.

You silly Americans and your super hero nonsense.
That reminds me that my Lucky Luke, Astrerix, and The Smurfs collections are still incomplete...

Michael Cera doesn't seem to age. What's that about?
Oh, IMDb says he's just (not quite) 22. Forget I asked.

...someone really ought to finally translate Alan Ford 1-75 to USA-speak or you kids may never grow up.
Translated Coco Bill or Zorry Kid would also be nice, but now I'm really stretching it.

The trailer for the movie looks fun. Then again, I said the same about Kick-Ass before it came out. (Which wasn't helped at all by reading the original comic.) And The Losers. And Iron Man 2.
Re: So I'm reading Scott Pilgrim
My Asterix is alive and kicking and complete. Some spines and covers are a bit rugged and ripped but that's what you get for moving twice a comic book collection that goes from father to son. Never read Lucky Luke though, which is a big mistake I must correct.P.P.A. wrote:You silly Americans and your super hero nonsense.

I bought a couple of Schtoumpfs albums in France last year, the first (with the black/purple Smurfs, awesome Night of the Living Dead-like story) and the third (the first one with Smurfette).
And btw, Scott Pilgrim is awesome and you are all insane, except Esrever and CP.

First Scott Pilgrim video game footage:

Ever since I saw the Pirate Baby short at Spike and Mike's, I've longed for an actual game to be made out of Paul Robertson's sprites. And now here it is, and it's the Scott Pilgrim game. Beyond perfect!

YES.
I can't remember the last time I saw a video game that looked so much like a video game.

Fuck, that actually looks really fucking good.
There's something satisfyingly perverse about those guy's sprites getting used for an actual game.
I may have to actually read Scott Pilgrim now. :|

That game looks like how it felt to play Turtles in Time at the arcade, but better.
No opinion on Scott Pilgrim, as I've yet to read it. Sounds neat though.

I thought this thread was about a book for a long time...
Also this game is hardcore gay. Holy shite, ban it.
River City Ransom is still cool, though!

Re: So I'm reading Scott Pilgrim
Say what you want about Scott Pilgrim, but Paul Robertson + Anamanaguchi = Awesomeness. Any day, anywhere.
Re: So I'm reading Scott Pilgrim
Paul Robertson worked on some of the sprites and animation for Drawn to Life too.

Re: So I'm reading Scott Pilgrim
I haven't read much of this, so can anyone tell me why two of the seven evil exes happen to be palette-swaps of each other? Is it like a gag on those twin bosses in River City Ransom or something?
Tho' I promise to read the whole comic if it comes to a conclusion where the chick dumps Scott and sends her new bloke after him. I really do.
