The visual differences made to the PS version of Silhouette Mirage really aren't that big a deal, unless you've been looking at comparison shots you wouldn't know the difference, and even when I played the PS version (I own them both) I didn't notice what was missing at first. I don't think the new bosses really add much, myself, so either one is not a bad way to go. I do like what WD did as far as game balance goes, but I prefer the Saturn version for the Japanese voice track more than anything else.

Astal is not nearly as awesome as it looks. It's pretty, but that's the only thing going for it.
And are there any games where I really should pick one region version over another? I'm thinking stuff like Pepsiman in the Japanese Fighting Vipers.
Fighting Vipers definitely, and I think Fighters Megamix also has more stuff in the Japanese version.
It's kind of the best platformer on the system by default.
I think calling Gex the best anything is a bit of a stretch. (Alot of a stretch.) It's worth a shot regardless, but get Clockwork Knight first.

Just out of curiosity, what are the problems with the Saturn version of Symphony? I was under the impression that it was the superior of the two.

We can't be friends anymore.

Incidentally, I bought Portal only a few weeks ago. How's it been faring for you? It left a pretty rancid taste in my mouth, like I'd spent half of my graduation gift money on what was essentially a tech demo. That's mostly because I was stupid and bought it separate from the Orange Box, though.

Besides, Rayman is better than Gex, easily.

Astal is a good game; it's just not a revolutionary game. It's relatively cheap, so go ahead and check it out.

Oh, and Symphony's problem, IIRC, is downscaled art, not using transparencies in spots where it really should be possible on the Saturn, and some slowdown (I think?). To make up for it, you get a "third hand" for potions, and two extra (forgettable) areas of the castle.

I've only played one sitting of Portal so far and only got up to level 13, I think, but I'm pretty impressed. It's clever. What don't you like about it?

I downloaded it from Live because it was the only game in the Orange Box I was interested in playing.

It's way too short. It only takes about 2 hours to play through, and that's only on the first run. There's a handful of "challenge" stages, but they're all just the original maps reworked slightly to make them as frustrating as the devs could manage. That, and it's the only game that has ever managed to disorient me. It's certainly a fun concept, but the reason it got the hype it did was because of the whole black sci-fi humor shtick, which is great, but the internet had already spoiled me long before then, so I'm bitter about the whole thing.

So what if I wear knee pads? That's just my lifestyle, alright? Don't even front.

Pfft! Good job derailing the topic, dude.

I don't know where people get the 2 hour figure from. Probably I just suck and am dumb, but Portal took me like 8 hours of intense, enjoyable, uninterrupted play.

The final act of Portal is one of the only two sequences in a game where I've felt a genuine emotional response, by which I mean pant-soiling terror. It's an unexpected, horrifying stroke of genius that had me in a cold sweat, cursing audibly. Gibbs, seriously, get on it. I'm not even going to /spoiler it. Go now.

In case you're wondering, the other one is the bathtub in Eternal Darkness. Good God.

So yeah, Sega Saturn. Get Shining Force III. It's really good.

On a related note, my arsehole brother came round the other morning and took back his Megadrive, Saturn and Dreamcast, with a plethora of rare and expensive games. He flogged the whole lot for £80 at GameStation because he "couldn't be bothered to eBay it all". What a chump.

Can I assume there will not actually be cake?

There is cake. Anyone who says there isn't either hasn't beaten the game or prematurely aborted the ending.

The ending is rather ambiguous, really. There's cake, yes, but no guarantee she'd ever share it with you.

I've only played the PSX port of Grandia. Am I missing out?

I never played Grandia although I wanted to. I just couldn't decide between buying the PS1 version which I can actually understand at the cost of that being a sacrilege due to it, you know, being on the PS1, and buying the ONLY TRUE Saturn version although I would have no clue what would be going on due to a lack of understanding of Japanese.

I didn't know there was a PSX version of it as well however. :PP:

I think it's far more important that Chell is either dead or a paraplegic.

I emulated that once. I got about as far as getting my friggin' weapon. I liked it, but never went back to it - I should amend that some day.

Emulated? What, as in, the N64 version? Dude, don't go there, they completely remade the game for the PC and it's 1000x better. Only shame is that some elements were lost in the process, but it's an acceptable sacrifice for the sake of playability.

And I still don't know where all the silver spades in Pyramid are.
